We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our Teenage Cancer Trust Unit, caring for young people aged 13-20 years.

Are you an experienced band 5 nurse (paediatric or adult) with at least two years haematology/oncology experience, looking to take the next step and become a band 6? Have you competed chemotherapy workbooks one and two? We are offering a band 6 training post that will support you in this journey. This role offers 6 months on the ward as a band 5 nurse, gaining confidence and signing off competencies. If you meet the set objectives within 6 months, you will be offered the band 6 post with no need to interview again.
You will have the opportunity to share and develop knowledge and skills in caring for a range of solid tumours and haematology cancers. You will care for patients undergoing a range of treatments including bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

You will be required to demonstrate experience and skills in this area and have leadership, development and organisation skills in order to coordinate safe efficient delivery of care to this patient group.

The UCLH TYA primary treatment centre provides world class cancer care in state-of-the-art age appropriate facilities, with the holistic needs of every patient at the forefront of all aspects of care, supported by an expert and extensive multidisciplinary team. We are also the leading centre for adolescent bone marrow transplantation.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register
• Accredited mentorship course or willing to undertake
• Relevant accredited clinical course (oncology/haematology 30 credits OR equivalent)
• BSc or working towards

Desirable criteria

• NVQ assessor

Experience

Essential criteria

• At least 2 years' experience in this specialty
• Proficient in chemotherapy administration and advanced IV administration skills or working towards
• Completion of chemotherapy workbooks 1 and 2

Communication

Essential criteria

• Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats

Quality

Essential criteria

• Demonstrates understanding of principles of clinical governance, e.g. risk management, audit and quality

Personal and People Development

Essential criteria

• Demonstrates evidence of professional development in line with KSF, maintains updated portfolio and is able to lead staff reviews and appraisals
• Demonstrates an awareness of the role of preceptor/facilitator
• Demonstrates a good understanding of professional boundaries with colleagues, patients and their families, recognising the complexities of caring for teenagers and young adults with cancer
