Education and registration

Essential criteria

  • BSc. or MSc. in Dietetics
  • State registration via Health and Care Professions Council

Desirable criteria

  • Member of relevant clinical specialist interest group
  • Completion of a post-graduate management/leadership course
  • Audit and Research training to a post-graduate level
  • Completion of validated/nationally recognised post-graduate training or equivalent in the specialist area
  • Registered member of the British Dietetic Association
  • Clinical Educators Course

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant postgraduate clinical experience which includes a reasonable amount of time working in a post covering all aspects of general clinical dietetics and incorporating diabetes, weight management and nutrition support.
  • Highly comprehensive specialist knowledge of dietetic assessment and treatment techniques including anthropometric measurements, biochemical interpretation and devising highly complex nutritional treatment plans
  • Working knowledge of local and national policies and procedures e.g. British Dietetic Association/Health and Care Professions Council Code of Conduct/Ethics, Health and Safety, Infection Control, Equality and Diversity
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development to a specialist level
  • Experience of and commitment to interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary team working
  • Evidence of contribution to clinical education and in-service training of less experienced staff/students and assistants
  • Understanding of clinical effectiveness and its implications for services including experience of quality issues, audit and evidence-based practice
  • Evidence of contribution to service improvement, development of policy/procedures
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safeguarding practices relevant to the clinical area

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in a post at this level
  • Knowledge of gastroenterology and HPB
  • Advanced knowledge/experience in dietetics relating to Cystic Fibrosis
  • Advanced experience in nutrition support
  • Experience of managing less senior staff
  • Student training qualifications e.g. SAS
  • Evidence of involvement in governance activities
  • Knowledge of community and Intermediate Care services
  • Evidence of participation in post-registration research
