The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking a Senior Sound and Moving Image Technician to join the Arts Cluster to support a wide range of specialist AV and IT user-facing systems to deliver teaching and lectures.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual with excellent customer service and technical skills who will deliver a first-class user experience for staff, students, and visitors via in-person support, telephone calls, email, and Microsoft Teams.

The role will be based at Strand Campus. You will provide support to our four departments, Culture, Media and Creative Industries (CMCI), Digital Humanities (DDH), Film Studies and Music. Your duties will include supporting teaching of practice-based modules across the Cluster as well as demonstrating and providing training to students and staff on specific equipment and software.

Other responsibilities include managing the Cluster AV equipment bookings via SISO, ensuring that AV equipment is available, functioning, and delivered as required for teaching and student assessments, lectures, functions, and local events.

As a Senior Sound and Moving Image technician you will be the technical and customer escalation point to identify service improvements and be able to work independently or under the supervision of the Business Operations Manager. You will have proven technical experience in an AV specialism with a good understanding of the underlying theory.

Working patterns will include being available on campus as needed when teaching is in session, in line with timetabling.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key Responsibilities

• Supporting teaching including demonstrating and training on software and equipment such as Adobe Premier Pro, Panasonic Lumix DC-S1H cameras, Tascam DR-60D MKII 4-Track Audio Recorders, Scarlett 18i20 audio interfaces, etc.
• Assisting lecturers in the teaching of workshops, bringing in equipment and technology to support their teaching, helping break out groups with practical knowledge of the equipment, relevant software, and industry techniques.
• Advice on use and maintenance of high-spec audio desks in teaching rooms (e.g. Crestron)
• Install, monitor and maintain a broad range of technical AV equipment, systems and software such as Sibelius/other music notation software, DAWs including Reaper, Adobe Premiere Pro, etc.
• Managing equipment bookings within applicable SLAs.
• Participate in the continual service improvement process.
• Exercise sound professional and technical knowledge and to keep up to date with new developments / best practice.
• Contribute to our knowledge base and documentation as required and adhere to University's IT policy.
• Provide specialist advice and knowledge where appropriate.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. Proven level of technical knowledge and understanding of a range of audio-visual equipment and software such as digital film production and postproduction equipment and software, music production and recording, gaming platforms and devices.
2. Excellent technical diagnostic and problem-solving skills
3. Demonstrable relevant technical industry experience (film/music/theatre).
4. Ability to work under pressure and meet challenging deadlines.
5. AV-related technical qualification.
6. Good standard of written and spoken English.
7. Ability to manage and prioritise own workload effectively.
8. Intermediate to advanced level in Digital Film Production and Postproduction and/or Music Production and Recording.
9. Good understanding of subject specific disciplines such as digital filmmaking - cameras and lighting and sound recording; video editing; sound editing and mixing for film; sound engineering and recording; sound mixing/mastering; digital music-making.

Desirable criteria

1. Knowledge and ability to support 35mm film screenings.
2. Professional practical digital filmmaking and/or audio-visual content production experience.
3. Experience with a good range of DAWs, and creating virtual and acoustic music for moving image.
4. Experience with a good range of professional cameras and postproduction software and workflows in a variety of settings. Practical experience as a performing or recording musician.
5. AV-related membership of a recognised organisation.
