Location - Southampton Permanent

Office Attendance - Our roles are hybrid, however you should be able to travel to our Eastleigh office at least 1 day per week for this position.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Insurance Money Services team.

Technical Challenges : The role involves designing, building, testing, supporting, and delivering our claims applications, deployed on the IBM i platform. There will also be opportunity to train in low-code on the OutSystems platform.

Mentorship Opportunities : You will work closely with all engineers on your team. Line managing, mentoring, and building the careers of Software Engineers. This provides a chance to share your knowledge and help other engineers grow.

Subject Matter Expertise : You will act as a subject matter expert within Claims Engineering allowing you to showcase and further develop your own expertise.

Collaborative Environment : We encourage engineers to share new ideas, challenge existing practices, and look for opportunities to improve their teams and the wider engineering community creating a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Influence on Direction : You will have the opportunity to set the direction with the Lead Engineers and drive through service improvements, features, and changes. This allows you to make a significant impact on the product and the team.

Career Advancement : Working closely with Lead and Principal Engineers and architects on longer-term technology goals provides an excellent opportunity for career advancement.

What you'll be doing

  • Supervise, line-manage and coach other engineers in the team
  • Lead teams of other engineers on features or work individually on small changes
  • Work closely with our internal stakeholders and third party suppliers
  • Analyse systems to re-engineer, update or add new features
  • Understand business requirements, documenting when required, including creating user stories with clear acceptance criteria
  • Design system changes according to modular software design principles
  • Write high-quality code and unit tests, according to defined standards
  • Complete work according to agreed commitments
  • Review work produced by other members of the team
  • Analyse and identify the root causes of problems and defects and design suitable fixes
  • Produce documentation describing new and existing systems

We need you to have:

  • Extensive experience showing the ability to analyse, design, and develop systems on the IBM i using:
  • RPGIV ILE free & fixed format
  • Embedded SQL
  • CL
  • DB2 (DDS and SQL DDL)
  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Knowledge of Agile practises and ceremonies

And if you have any of these, even better.

  • Experience of coaching junior software engineers
  • Insurance or other financial services background
  • Exposure to DevOps toolsets and CI/CD concepts
  • RPG Smart Pages (RPGSp)
  • Understanding and exposure to integrating REST/SOAP API endpoints
  • Writing Swagger/YAML specifications
  • Programming with 2E (CA/Advantage/Synon)
  • Using PTC Implementer (formerly MKS Implementer)
  • Developing interfaces with JDE
  • Developing EDI interfaces (ideally ABC)
  • OutSystems low-code
