Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Responsible for identifying infection control concerns and lead decision making with the On-Call Microbiologist with regards to Infection Prevention and Controls to maintain patient safety. Initiate operational Trust plans to provide suitable co-horting/isolation of patients with infectious disease.
• Monitor against key performance indicators as per Trust policy and prioritise safe staffing in all areas with the use of SafeCare. This resource will aid the post holder the overview of the hospital and lead with the allocation of skilled nursing workforce.
• To liaise with staff bank and Care Providers to enable them to prioritise outstanding shifts based on current and forecasted activity and acuity.
• Where clinical (e.g. medicine, therapy, nursing) reduced levels of staffing are identified, be responsible to discuss with consultant (or similar) to understand and challenge the need for locum cover.
• To work within financial requirements of Divisions
• Out of hours, liaise with approved medical locum agencies to obtain cover and ensure clinical sign off in line with Trust process
• Sign worked off locum shifts according to Trust financial instruction, utilising Patchwork
• To participate in direct patient care. To be trained, skilled and demonstrate competence in key nursing interventions this will include cannulation, phlebotomy, catheterisation (male and female), management of tracheostomy, management of NIV including interpretation of ABG / VBG and IV drug administration, recognition of the deteriorating adult and appropriate first line interventions and escalation (this is not an exhaustive list).
• Lead the collation and analysis of information regarding clinical workload of the wider Hospital at Night team. Highlighting, appropriate escalation and reporting (via Datix) (on a shift by shift basis) any unmet clinical need at night.
• To adhere at all times to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and any other NMC guidelines and regulations.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Masters Level Study or a willingness to undertake
  • Completed, or willing to undertake, management/leadership qualification or extensive management experience

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant Experience (in different and varied acute clinical settings) confident working at a band 6+ level
  • Experience of teaching and assessing
  • Experience of working with an electronic patient record

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Management of tracheostomy
  • Management of NIV including interpretation of ABG / VBG
  • Cannulation, phlebotomy, catheterisation (male and female)
  • Perform a comprehensive clinical assessment
  • IT skills including word, Cerner, PowerPoint, excel, email and internet
  • Ability to manage potential conflict/difficult situations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
