An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Paediatric Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to join our team to support children and young people across Mid and South Essex in their journey through surgery. We are looking for a dynamic, passionate, flexible individual who can adapt to changing demands and workload on our two surgical units Wizard and Pegasus.

Wizard and Pegasus support elective surgery across many specialities such as ENT, Plastic surgery, Max fax , Ophthalmology and Orthopaedics.

Broomfield Paediatrics are the central HUB work for ENT and trauma (Plastics and Max fax) for the region, this gives an opportunity for the successful applicant to expand on knowledge and skills within these specialist areas.

Wizard ward day surgery is a 10 bedded area that supports children and young people and our newly built in-patient ward Pegasus is a 11 bedded ward supporting children who may require overnight surgical admission, along with an established pre-assessment service.

The unit is staffed by an experienced nursing team and staff progression is actively encouraged. You would be joining a friendly and dynamic multi-disciplinary team who you will be managing on a day to day basis.

Main duties of the job

In this position you will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, work with different members of the MDT from a multitude of specialties and be pivotal in influencing the delivery of care to children and young people requiring surgery within the MSE.

Experience in elective surgery is essential to the role and you will work closely with other members of the wider surgical team and key stakeholders such as paediatric anaesthetists, paediatric nursing teams, physiotherapists, Cleft Clinical Nurse Specialists and Clinical Nurse Specialist for Orthopaedics, waiting list officers and secretaries to improve the experience of children and families whilst being part of the evolving service and leading on change.

Excellent communication skills, the ability to decision make, and to be proactive and forward thinking is essential to this role. You will provide leadership and direction to your team alongside this being able to motivate and support staff is essential as well as having the ability to adapt to changing priorities. You will be supported by our Paediatric Matron for children's services and the paediatric education team

  • Registered Nurse (Child)
  • EPLS

Desirable criteria

  • Degree in Nursing

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrable experience as a Senior Band 5 or Band 6 nurse in Paediatric setting

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of change management
