Job overview
An exciting opportunity has opened up for an experience Paediatric Intensive Care Trained Nurse. The Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse will be offered at 33 hours/per week and the successful candidate will be expected to work rotational shifts.
The PICU at St Mary's Hospital forms part of the West London Children's Healthcare. The PICU Team provides life-saving therapies for children and infants with primary Respiratory illnesses, Neurology and immediate Neurosurgical care, specialist Haematology/Bone Marrow Transplants, Infectious Diseases, Allergy services, Ophthalmology, Dental; and a broad range of Medical and Surgical services, including Major Trauma, Acute Metabolic Medicine, Endocrinology and Advance Renal Services, such as, Heamofiltration and Plasmophoresis. We are also national center for High Consequence Infectious Disease and a designated PICU for the children's acute retrieval services.
The PICU has a bed-base of 15 beds and the prospective candidate will be closely involved in the developments of the new premises and services. We pride ourselves to be an institute to learning and innovation; and the successful candidate will be given an opportunity to lead on projects that will benchmark our PICU against national standards.
The department benefits from a practice development team of educators and risk/audit nurses and family liaison who provide support and education to all levels of staff. As a Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse you will also have the opportunity to work closely with our Paediatric Nurse Development Team, Paediatric Site Practitioners PSP's and the Senior Nurse Management Team. The post holder will also be afforded academic modules on the Children's Advanced Nurse Practitioner Programme and Non-Medical Prescribing, as appropriate.
The successful candidate should have a PICU qualification or equivalent, and have expert clinical skills with strong evidence of management and leadership abilities. You should have a working knowledge of change management and implementing quality improvement methodologies as required.
It is an expectation that all staff employed who come in contact with children and young people have a duty to safeguard and promote their welfare.
This post will be subject to criminal records bureau checks at an enhanced level.
Main duties of the job
- To effectively support the Specialist Matron to manage the Paediatric Critical Care Service (PCCS).
- To provide clinical and managerial leadership, maintaining good working relationships, compatible with an efficient and effective running of the service.
- To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), communicating effectively with all levels of medical and nursing staff.
- To uphold the Unit's Nursing Philosophy of Care.
- To promote and develop paediatric critical care nursing on a local, national and international level.
- To act at all times as a professional and experienced PCCS nurse.
- To work alongside the practice development team to ensure the educational needs of the PCCS are met.
- To deputise for the Specialist Matron.

Education/ qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse/RN Child/RSCN
- Recognised qualification in Paediatric/Adult Intensive Care Nursing
- APLS/EPLS certification
- Teaching and assessing qualification/ mentorship course or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Working towards MSc level education.
- APLS/EPLS instructor status
- Management module
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience as Senior Staff nurse at Band 6/7 within Paediatric Critical Care in the last 3 years
- Insight into managerial issues in relation to people and resources.
- Awareness of current local and national initiatives
- Evidence of developing an aspect of Paediatric Critical Care nursing practice (Mandatory for Shortlisting)

- Evidence of local/national representation
- Evidence of managing change from a personal and leadership level
Skills/knowledge/ abilities
