Detailed job description and main responsibilities

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

  1. Provide management support for staff and act as preceptor to designated staff.
  2. To lead the endocrine patients services. Review and implement change to the service to support ongoing improvements in clinical practice reflecting capacity and demand issues.
  3. To assist the nurse manager/deputy team leader to ensure the daily running of the outpatients clinics and daycase ward, escalating issues relating to safe staffing levels in a timely manner.
  4. Liaise with clinical and admin team regarding clinic capacity and staffing levels.
  5. To liaise with the bed manager to ensure optimal bed usage.
  6. Close collaboration with medical staff to ensure realistic and efficient utilisation of resources.
  7. Assess, plan and implement clinical care and maintain associated patient records.
  8. To organise daily work schedule and off duty rotas ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for appropriate patient needs.
  9. To assist in maintaining the staff and non-staff budget within agreed limits.
  10. Collaborate with other service providers in ensuring the highest possible standards of cleanliness and nutrition are achieved.
  11. Be aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken.
  12. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately.
  13. Ensure all trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary.
  14. To ensure all team members adhere to the uniform policy and maintain professional image for the unit.
  15. Report to Senior Nurse /Lead Operational Nurse on patient affairs/activity and staff development.
  16. Support those senior staff acting as appraisers to ensure they have a meaningful and achievable appraisal.
  17. Ensure each designated staff member participates in a personal development plan and act to maximise the potential of others.
  18. Assist/lead in the recruitment process for the unit.
  19. Take a progressive approach to the management of short and long-term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Lead Operational Nurse/Service Manager and Human Resources.
  20. Take appropriate action in relation to any disciplinary matter when the need arises and follow procedures as laid down by the Trust.
  21. Supervise the requisition of stocks and equipment with care and economy.
  22. Act up as required

TRAINING & EDUCATION

  1. To be up to date in all IV training programs (level 1 and 2) including annual updates and competent in all areas of clinical practice.
  2. Ensure all staff have an appropriate level of training and are offered relevant support.
  3. Present at training days and at conference.
  4. Initiate and undertake research and audit which will influence practice.
  5. Be up to date and competent with other clinical skills such as performing ECG's, basic life support and intermediate life support.
  6. Attend all mandatory study days and ensure attendance of all staff.

PROFESSIONAL

  1. Have expert knowledge and be able to advise and support nursing staff within trust & externally regarding emergency admissions and associated issues.
  2. Liaise closely with the medical team and other members of the MDT in respect of patient care promoting the highest standard of care.
  3. Participate in the on call rota for hospital cover out of hours.
  4. Represent the unit at the Band 7 forum.
  5. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects.
  6. Keep abreast of issues influencing the Trust both internally and externally and ensure senior colleagues and the team have a good understanding of the same.
  7. Participate in policy writing for the unit and Trust.
  8. Be fully aware of the divisional objectives and the Trust's corporate plan.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • RGN Level 1
  • Degree or Diploma in Nursing Studies
  • Qualification in teaching & assessing or equivalent
  • Non-medical prescriber

Desirable criteria

  • Management Course

Experience

Essential criteria

  • At least 3 years endocrine experience in an outpatient setting, Day units or something similar.
