Detailed job description and main responsibilities

PROFESSIONAL

1. To establish an agreed standard of patient care and ensure it is maintained.

2. Supervise the professional work of nursing staff.

3. Liaise closely with the Senior Nurse Manager/Modern Matron and other members of the Senior Nursing Team.

4. Liaise closely with medical staff in respect of patient care, promoting the highest standards of care and treatment.

5. Ensure that all Trust Policies are carried out, implementing new policies as required.

6. Assist in the development of the Nursing Service within current changing trends.

EDUCATIONAL

1. Liaise closely with the University, participating in teaching of basic and post-basic learners and their assessments, within the guidelines laid down by the English National Board.

2. Offer guidance and teaching on management skills to Ward staff.

3. Ensure that Ward staff are kept up to date with relevant issues affecting both cancer nursing and nursing in general, promoting an evidence based approach.

4. Maintain own personal development and ensure own educational needs are met.

5. Promote and support self awareness of colleagues' own professional, educational and developmental needs.

6. Ensure attendance on yearly mandatory study days.

PERSONNEL

1. Participate in the selection and appointment of new staff, adjusting skill mix as appropriate to promote best use of available resources.

2. Report on the progress of staff to the Senior Nurse. Carry out individual performance reviews and appraisals as necessary.

3. Exercise leadership by example in:

- fair and clear relationships with staff.

- sound organisation and judgement.

- clear and sincere communications.

- being aware of ones own limitations.

- seeking advice where necessary.

- confidentiality.

- adherence to the NMC Professional Code of Conduct.

4. Ensure the Health and Safety at Work Act is adhered to and understood.

5. Report staff sickness and absence in accordance with Hospital Policy.

ADMINISTRATION

1. Maintain off-duty rotas in consultation with the Senior Nurse/Modern Matron to allow for adequate cover for the Ward.

2. Act up as required.

3. Maintain good order and cleanliness of the Ward in conjunction with nursing staff, non-nursing staff and domestics.

4. Supervise the requisition of stocks and equipment with care and economy.

5. Evaluation of equipment in accordance with laid down procedures.

6. Report all accidents, incidents and defects in equipment to Senior Nurse or deputy, in accordance with policy.

7. Report to Senior Nurse and/or Nurse Executive Director on Ward affairs.

8. Manage ward budget effectively.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • RGN Level 1
  • Degree in Nursing Studies
  • Post Registration Certificate in Cancer or equivalent
