Purpose of the Role:

To contribute to the development of all aspects of the Driver in the Loop (DIL), delivering continuous improvement and major upgrade projects to maintain our position as a leader in the field.

Role Dimensions:

The role sits within the Simulator Development Group. The work is predominantly project-based and requires collaboration with the other teams in Vehicle Performance, as well as Control Systems, Design and Race Engineering. The role also involves working with external partners, such as universities.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Develop and correlate simulation models of the DIL simulator motion system.
  • Propose, implement and test refinements to the simulator motion controller and motion cueing algorithms.
  • Conduct research into human factors to improve understanding of the driver as a control system.
  • Develop and refine offline simulation tools to aid correlation and vehicle performance development.
  • Assist with the development and commissioning of motion system upgrades.
  • Contribute to project planning and reporting, including writing business cases, specifications and project reviews, and delivering presentation to key stakeholders.
  • Propose and champion innovative technical concepts & development opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Essential

  • Outstanding academic background qualified to postgraduate level or equivalent capability in Mechanical or Control Engineering or related discipline.
  • Ability to self-start & work independently, as well as collaboratively.
  • Ability to quickly understand complex problems and identify and implement a route to solve them.
  • Ability to work to deadlines on a variety of timescales and balance your workload between different projects.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate technical information.

Desirable

  • Technical knowledge of control systems and mechatronics.
  • Experience in using and developing models in Matlab / Simulink and/or C++.
  • Experience of working with real-time hardware interfaces (e.g. NI / Beckhoff TwinCAT / dSpace).
  • Broad awareness of simulator & systems developments across industry and academia.
  • Industrial or research experience in vehicle dynamics or human factors.
  • Understanding of tyre and vehicle sub-system correlation.

McLaren Racing Composites (MRC) is based at the McLaren Racing Composites Facility in Woking Business Park. This is a new state-of-the-art production centre with the latest in CNC machines and autoclave technology, an open plan office, gym and quiet room.
