The British Government's Offices in New York are offering an exciting opportunity to join the Security team as Senior Security Officer. This is a meaningful role which supports and further develops the special relationship between the UK and the US - contributing to work shaping international diplomacy to make a real difference globally.

In this role, you will be part of a dynamic international environment spanning the British Government's extensive network across the United States and the United Kingdom, which includes the Embassy in Washington, the UK Mission to the United Nations, multiple Consulates, and other Government Offices-comprising over 900 staff and supporting the work of approximately 30 UK government departments and agencies.

As the Senior Security Officer in the Security Team, you will contribute to strengthening UK-US collaboration in a wide variety of ways. Positioned within the Corporate Services Team, you will work closely with internal stakeholders such as political and consular teams and external partners including other Missions and UN agencies. This role supports the UK's broader strategic objectives in multi-lateral diplomacy and assisting British nationals and offers valuable experience in international engagement and cross-government collaboration.

We're looking for a proactive, energetic and communicative professional with experience in customer service and service delivery. You'll bring strong work ethics and attention to details and a commitment to team building and professionalism.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Lead on the supervision and day-to-day management of site security at the UK Government offices in New York
  • Line manage 6 security officers who work on a shift pattern of early and late shifts, Monday to Friday
  • Manage shift rosters and other staff management duties such as training, team building and security standards
  • Manage procedures and standards around security patrols and routines, logs and checks, management of building passes, access control including freight elevator access, locks and keys and security equipment
  • Liaise with building management on security management and concerns related to the wider building
  • Ensure procedures and responsibilities for the security officers are implemented to a consistent and high performing standard
  • Provide support to the Post Security Manager on key security management policy and procedure and on administration of security assets, registers and logs where required
  • Provide cover and resilience for security officers at the public receptions, escorting contractors and other security officer duties in the offices during times of absence, breaks and busy periods
  • Support as necessary on security at events at the Consul General's residence and with high-level visitors
  • Provide security support to the UK government crisis and business continuity planning work
  • Other ad hoc tasks as directed by both the Regional Security Advisor and Post Security Manager

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • At least 5 years' work experience in a customer service, office-based environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and people engagement skills and first-rate customer service, including a proven track record in dealing with members of the public
  • Experience of working in a public reception
  • High degree of professionalism and strong ability to represent the UK government externally to visitors and other members of the public
  • Adaptable, flexible and energetic; ability to work well in a team and to work collaboratively to deliver shared tasks and assist others
  • Experience of managing a team, particularly in an office environment
  • Proficiency with IT databases and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Legal status to live and work in the US in your own right, from time of application
  • Due to security regulations, must hold a passport from the following countries: US, UK, Canada, Australia and/or New Zealand

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Understanding of current world geopolitical events, particularly as it pertains to UK Government policy
  • Previous experience of working in the diplomatic community, especially if in New York is helpful
  • Previous experience of office facilities work is useful but not essential

Unique Tax Rules

Employees working for a foreign government in the United States are subject to specific tax rules. As a result, the tax treatment of an employee's compensation will vary depending on their work location and citizenship status-whether they are a U.S. citizen, dual citizen, lawful permanent resident (green card holder), or a foreign national without a green card.

In alignment with HM Treasury policy, employees of the UK government in the US who are deemed tax-exempt by the IRS (i.e., not liable for U.S. taxes) receive a tax-abated salary, also known as a net salary. For all other employees, the UK Government cannot withhold taxes (including FICA) on behalf of a US taxpayer. These employees must directly remit taxes on a quarterly and annual basis to the relevant tax authorities.

Working patterns

This role is in-person and full-time at 40 hours per week. General business hours are 8:00 - 17:00, Monday - Friday. Occasional out-of-hours work may be required.
