Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join the respiratory physiotherapy team on a substantive contract in Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Our friendly department is full of opportunity for a dynamic, enthusiastic physiotherapist who wishes to develop a range of clinical expertise within the field of cardio-respiratory physiotherapy.

We are looking for a motivated physiotherapist, with a keen interest in the field of cardio-respiratory physiotherapy, a wide range of clinical experience, good communication skills, interpersonal skills and a passion for delivering excellent patient centred care.

There are multiple opportunites within our team to develop a wide range of specialist clinical skills as well as non clinical skills. From a clinical perspective you will be involved in provision of the NIV service, ventilator and tracheostomy weaning and rehabilitation both within the critical care and ward environments. You will have excellent support from band 7 and 8a specialist physiotherapists in each rotation and work closely with the well-established multi-disciplinary team.

From a non clinical perspective, you will have the opportunity to participate in quality improvement projects on each rotation with support of band 7s, 8s and a respiratory clinical acaedemic to help ensure the continuous development of services as we have a passion to ensuring a high class patient centred service. You will have the responsibilities of supervising junior and student physiotherapists.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high standard physiotherapy service to patients in all service areas
  • To acquire and demonstrate knowledge of relevant pathologies, conditions, normal values relating to the specialist area of physiotherapy.
  • To be responsible for own caseload and be responsible within a defined area of the service and to undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To supervise and contribute to the training and development of therapy support workers, band 5 physiotherapists and students.
  • To undertake service development projects to further own and team's clinical practice within each area.
  • To make recommendations for service development, with active involvement in the implementation of changes to practice or service protocols.
  • To participate in one of the out of hours weekend working and overnight respiratory on-call rota (specific rota details are held locally within departments).dependant on speciality area
  • Paediatrics only: The job holder will help to provide a 7 day 24 hour paediatric inpatient service when completing the acute inpatient rotation (specific rota details are held locally within departments).

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Physiotherapy
  • State registration with the Health Professions Council.
  • Evidence of CPD through maintenance of a portfolio
  • Able to demonstrate specialist learning from previous physiotherapy rotations, formal post-graduate level learning and informal CPD (both general and specific to clinical fields of speciality).
  • Demonstrate learning of personal effectiveness and first line leadership from experience and from both formal and informal CPD activity.

Desirable criteria

  • Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
  • Membership of CSP special interest groups relevant to speciality

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Recent substantial and sustained experience in relevant physiotherapy specialities and clinical settings
  • Experience of working as part of a physiotherapy and multidisciplinary team
  • To have participated in service development projects.
  • Experience of clinical education of staff, students or assistants
  • Experience of supervision of students/ physiotherapy assistants, with development of basic supervision skills
  • Experience of on-call and weekend working in an acute hospital
  • To have undertaken audit and/or research, either within area of physiotherapy speciality or as part of the MDT
  • Competent IT skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience in the NHS as a qualified physiotherapist
  • Previous senior physiotherapist experience in relevant post
  • Involvement with Clinical Governance issues and an understanding of their relation to patient care
  • Experience of on-call and weekend working in an acute hospital
