Job overview

This is an opportunity for an experienced, dynamic and self-motivated research nurse to join the Peart Rose Research Team within the Surgery, Cancer and Cardiovascular Division at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Your primary responsibility will be working as part of Peart Rose Research Team managing a portfolio of vascular research projects. The Team Leader should provide outstanding leadership and line management of their clinical research team in the delivery of high quality research. You will be responsible for the day to day supervision of the research team of nurses and practitioners ensuring the successful delivery of these projects. You will work collaboratively with the clinical trials team and the wider multidisciplinary team in the management of research patients. The team leader role requires sound knowledge of research and patient pathways within the vascular specialty to support the team in growing and delivering the portfolio. The successful candidate will be high profile and visible, leading by example. They will be excellent at engaging with new clinicians/sub-specialty areas in research and will require excellent communication skills to nurture and maintain key relationships across the NHS trust, Imperial College, sponsors and the commercial organisations. You will be expected to show initiative and work with minimal supervision.

The ability to manage and prioritise the workload of yourself and the wider team, and to work flexibly across specialties and across hospital sites, are essential aspects of these post. The studies (and hence team) run both within the self-contained Peart Rose Research Unit as well as outside of it, within the busy hospital environment e.g. in wards and clinics. The studies can be cross-hospital sites (e.g. at St Mary's Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital or Hammersmith Hospital) but are based mainly in Charing Cross and St Mary's Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • The Research Team Leader has a key management role in the delivery of the operational aspects of research trials, providing management expertise and input to ensure the timely delivery of the growing portfolio of studies undertaken within Imperial while ensuring the needs of patient care are based at the centre of delivery.
  • The post holder will have operational oversight of one or more speciality research delivery teams, including line managing research nurses/practitioners and/or associates and will support the effective use of infrastructure and resources.
  • The postholder supports the aims of the Trust to improve the speed, quality, and integration of clinical research, through the successful delivery of clinical research in the NHS.
  • The post holder is a recognised expert in one or more specialities and in the field of clinical research, providing advice, care and support to patients entering clinical trials. He/she will take responsibility for the planning, development and implementation of the clinical research portfolio that reflects the patient population, the work and interests of the local clinical teams. You will provide expert support to colleagues and staff through the research study process, from grant application, to feasibility, to clinical pathways, to study delivery.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • NMC registration
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Project management qualification or experience
  • Master's Degree or equivalent clinical experience

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Relevant clinical and research experience at Band 6 in vascular sciences.
  • Understanding of National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), its values, aims and structure
  • Proven clinical research experience & knowledge in Research Governance Framework and ICH GCP
  • Experience of supervision and line management of staff

Desirable criteria

  • Understanding of grant application process
