Job Description

Role Overview

Ipsos Public Affairs is the national leader in social research. We bridge the gap between government and the public, providing robust research and analysis. We cover broad issues that shape the implementation of public policy in modern society and how to engage the public in the policy-making process.

This vacancy is for a mixed methods role within the Energy and Environment Team. Our hugely impactful research and evaluation portfolio means we are influencing energy and environment policy across national and international governments. We are conducting complex multi-year evaluations on key policy priorities (energy innovation, decarbonisation, circular economy, air quality and agricultural transition), working internationally on COP26 legacy and net zero projects, and running an engagement dialogue on climate change adaptation.

What will I be doing?

This is an exciting opportunity for a developing researcher to join a growing team working on transformational policy issues that will help the UK transition to net zero, enhance climate resilience and support nature recovery. You will learn more about research and evaluation methods as well as gaining greater knowledge of key energy and environment policy areas. This will enable you to take on an increasing role in managing high profile studies which influence and inform decision-making and implementation of energy and environment policy.

You will learn this in a friendly environment where you have multiple people to learn from to develop your skills.

We are looking for someone who has experience in qualitative or quantitative research or both. Experience in working on policy evaluation is desirable but not essential.

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Managing smaller quantitative and qualitative research projects from inception through to delivery, or managing strands of larger projects, for example where research informs evaluation.
  • Effective communication with clients and stakeholders.
  • Taking a proactive approach to developing knowledge of the client's business.
  • Effectively managing relationships with suppliers and with internal operations colleagues to ensure the objectives of the research are met and on budget.
  • Drafting questionnaires, discussion guides and fieldwork materials such as invitation letters, interviewer instructions and recruitment materials.
  • Managing and monitoring fieldwork.
  • Moderating depth interviews and discussion groups.
  • Drafting data specifications and checking data files.
  • Setting up qualitative analysis frameworks.
  • Conducting literature reviews and analysing policy.
  • Writing reports and presentations that deliver insights to meet the client's objectives.
  • Quality checking key deliverables, ensuring they are delivered accurately and to the highest quality.
  • Monitoring a project's financial progress, identifying problems and suggesting solutions.
  • Contributing to business development and proposals through administrative tasks and drafting of technical and commercial sub-sections.

Ipsos UK offers a hybrid working environment, 3 days in the office and working the rest from home.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Very good quantitative and qualitative social research skills
  • Excellent attention to detail, organised, and solutions-focused
  • Good project and budget management skills
  • Time management skills, working across multiple projects, prioritising tasks efficiently
  • Ability to work to tight and demanding deadlines to deliver profitable work and assure quality of all outputs
  • Experience in writing questionnaires, discussion guides, fieldwork materials etc.
  • Ability to understand and interpret qualitative and quantitative data
  • Very good communication, client handling and supplier negotiation skills
  • Confident and clear written and verbal communication skills, including experience of preparing written reports and presentations, with a high level of accurate use of English and the ability to write in a variety of styles
  • Proven ability to work well in teams
  • Interest and/or knowledge of energy, climate and environmental policies
  • Proficiency in Excel, SPSS and other packages (desired, not essential)
  • Experience of policy evaluation (desired, not essential)
