ABOUT THE ROLE

The role holder will assist in the execution of funded biomedical research involving laboratory animals. The individual hired will be responsible for overseeing the breeding, genotyping, and maintenance of experimental mouse colonies; planning of experiments; performing animal procedures; training and oversight of lab members involved in animal work; maintenance of documents related to animal use including ethics, training, and regulatory documents. They will be expected to attend regular lab meetings and one on one meetings with the PI, collaborate with other lab members, perform independent work, and maintain good records. While the majority of the position will be focused on animal research, some bench top laboratory work, such as work with organotypic cultures and tissue histology, may be involved.

The role is fixed term for 2 years. There may be a requirement to work occasional evenings and weekends.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The successful candidate will be joining the Johnson laboratory at Northumbria University, part of the Applied Sciences department and the Translational Biosciences research theme, and will report directly to Professor Johnson. The Johnson laboratory has two main research interests, which will both be topics of focus for this position: the pathogenesis of primary mitochondrial disease, and the basic biology of anaesthesia. The role holder will be joining a vibrant team of individuals at various career stages who are excited about the work they do.

ABOUT YOU

Essential to the role:

  • PIL AB certification
  • PIL C certification
  • Experience working with laboratory research animals
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and assist in procedures such as stereotactic injection.
