Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will support the Principal Investigator in delivery of research activity on two European Space Agency projects. The SnowDROP project will look at use of snow tomography to constrain snowpack simulations through data assimilation in support of a new Earth Observation mission design concept. The role entails engaging community to determine requirements for snow layering and microstructure, developing the scientific basis for this microwave concept and testing different sensor designs through numerical modelling. The CEMSIE project will evaluate the Snow Microwave Radiative Transfer model against Arctic field observations and develop new snow retrieval algorithms based on multi-sensor synergies and modern techniques such as machine learning. The candidate will have the opportunity to visit the European Space Agency and attend a training workshop on Satellite Mission Design.
This role is for a fixed term duration of 15 months, with a possibility to extend contract by a further 3 months.
ABOUT YOU
Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (Climate Physics, Physical Geography, Mathematics, Glaciology) and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in snowpack modelling and/or microwave radiative transfer modelling and measurement of snow microstructure. Experience with large data analysis and machine learning techniques is highly desirable.
