Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join VSL's Core Business Unit, based at our London Head Office in Becket House.
This is a high impact commercial leadership role, responsible for managing the full commercial and contractual lifecycle of complex civil engineering and specialist construction projects. The position offers broad exposure across procurement strategy, contract administration, client and subcontractor negotiation, and commercial forecasting, supporting the successful financial delivery of projects from pre contract through to final account.
In addition to supporting a strong pipeline of UK works, the role presents opportunities to contribute to VSL's flagship major projects, collaborating with senior internal stakeholders and project leadership teams on technically complex and high profile delivery programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Management and Cost Control
Act as the commercial lead on allocated projects, providing guidance on all QS and contract matters.
Prepare cost estimates, budgets and cost plans, and work closely with the cost controller to ensure financial objectives are achieved.
Secure and manage full and timely entitlement through applications for payment, valuations, and final account settlement.
Procurement and Tendering
Lead procurement activities including tendering strategy and subcontractor engagement.
Prepare sub letting documentation, tender analysis and recommendations for subcontract award.
Participate in tender interviews and support decision making on appointment strategy.
Contracts, Claims and Final Accounts
Manage contract administration activities including variations, claims, early warnings, and dispute avoidance.
Prepare narrative and supporting documentation for claims submissions where required.
Oversee commercial close out and final accounts ensuring accurate and recoverable positions.
Leadership and Stakeholder Management
Provide clear commercial direction to project teams on scope, risk, responsibilities, and programme durations.
Lead and coach junior commercial staff, review, check and develop their output.
Build strong, credible and collaborative relationships with clients, subcontractors, consultants and internal stakeholders.
Reporting and Forecasting
Prepare commercial reports including income forecasts, subcontractor liabilities forecasts, cash flow forecasts, and monthly valuations and reporting for top management.
Ensure compliance with VSL QA requirements and best practice across commercial processes.
Candidate Profile
Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
Minimum 8 years' experience in the civils industry, ideally within complex infrastructure delivery.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, comfortable working independently and leading commercial matters on projects.
Corporate membership of RICS or equivalent.
Excellent written and spoken English.
