The Public Transport Team is looking for a Senior Public Transport Operations officer to support the Principal Officer in various aspects of the Public Transport teams work.

You will primarily be involved with supporting the analysing, processing and responding to of information which relates to road closures, special events (e.g. Bristol Harbour Festival) and which impact on the bus network. You will need to work with internal and external partners to ensure temporary arrangements are put in place such as diverted bus routes or temporary bus stops so as to minimise disruption to the travelling public.

The Public Transport team has recently undergone a small restructure with a new management team in place. This will be an opportunity to join a refreshed and updated team, and contribute your ideas to service improvement and new ways of working for the benefit of Bristol citizens.

Previous experience of working in an operational role is essential, as well as knowledge and understanding of public transport operations. Key behaviours associated with this role are the ability to think quickly, remain calm under pressure, and problem solving. The nature of the work is both planned and unplanned and you will need to balance both requirements.

The City has ambitious plans to deliver improved sustainable transport options, both in the City and within the wider region. These plans include;

  • Strategic corridor interventions to improve public transport, walking and cycling along key corridors
  • Transforming our local communities through the development of 'Liveable Neighbourhoods'
  • Developing Mass Transit options for the city
  • Building on our success as Cycling City to further develop and implement a world class walking and cycling network in the city
  • Making school journeys safer and increasing walking and cycling by implementing School Streets
  • Behaviour change, engagement and training to promote sustainable transport modes

Role of the Public Transport Team

The Public Transport Team is responsible for various aspects of the public transport system in Bristol, and working with various internal and external stakeholders to make this happen. Some of the key aspects of the Public Transport Teams work are:

  • The maintenance, renewal and upgrade of around 1400 bus stops;
  • Generating income through bus stop suspension charges and bus shelter advertising;
  • Analysing and responding to road closures and other issues which impact on the public transport network;
  • Ensuring that new developments and projects take into consideration public transport requirements;
  • Managing contracts relating to public transport infrastructure such as bus shelters and metrobus ipoints;
  • Working with the West of England Combined Authority (the Transport Authority) to ensure co-ordination on various public transport matters at a local and strategic level;
  • Working collaboratively with Coach Operators and the Taxi Trade;
  • Working with organisers of special events, such as the Great Bristol Run and Balloon Fiesta, to ensure transport requirements are met;
  • Delivering or supporting projects of varying scale and complexity.
