About The Role:

The Senior Projects Engineer Systems Integration ensures that the engineering and technical activities for Smiths Detection and 3rd Party equipment integration, through Digital Networked Solutions, Software applications and PLC low level controls, are coordinated, prioritized and implemented. They ensure this is done in line with appropriate business processes and tools.

Although based from our offices in Hemel Hempstead, it will include significant travel across UK & Ireland but also supporting Israel activities as and when required.

  • This role will hold accountability for the NW Market Service Delivery and Programme execution for IT & Digital Networked Solutions in the field. Working closely with Programmes, Product Support and Technology departments, you should have the ability and authority to request; (1) additional experts to be assigned to key tasks at short notice; (2) make substantial technical decisions on IT & Digital Solution integration; and (3) take technical decisions with respect to the execution and integration aspects of complex projects and programme works in accordance with the Master Project Plan.
  • You will be a key contributor to the designing of test plans, technical documentation, writing and execution of test cases for functional and/or performance testing within the domain of large-scale aviation programmes, critical infrastructure, airport digital checkpoint environments, Hold Baggage Systems (HBS), Digital Networked Solutions and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
  • You will develop strong expertise in the assigned domain area and effectively communicate status, metrics, and issues on regular basis.
  • As an accomplished and industry certified professional level VMware/Network Engineer, your expertise will result in the successful upgrade of existing Server and Digital Networked Solutions and integration of Computed Topography & Diffraction products across multiple data centers and customer sites that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • You will have experience of Condition Based Monitoring applications and understand industry standard PLC integration and automation protocols.
  • You will become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on how our Digital Network Solutions and Software applications work, with a high level of integration with automation knowledge and experience. You will provide cross functional Digital Networked Solutions product support for data driven applications, Condition Based Monitoring, automation and engineering controls topology aspects of projects and programmes as well as supporting customer Sales opportunities.
  • You will respond to field service calls and provide IT and SW application back-up, structured training and support for Field Service Engineers, delivering robust governance, service continuity, flexibility and reliability for Smiths Detection customers with critical throughput, dataflow and networked application requirements, while ensuring adherence to the appropriate SLAs / KPIs.
  • You will provide support and inputs required by the Quality and PLP processes, including inputs to Product Support for Service Concepts, Product Service Plans (PSP), design for service and reliability, cost models and to maintain close relationships within all COE Departments to ensure best possible response to NPI and Quality customer issues, training and documentation.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the technical development, deployment and upgrade of advanced Digital Networked Solutions and Integrated Security Screening Equipment programmes, including design, testing, validation and third-party integration (3PI).
  • Advanced Integration developments and programmes, providing detailed user requirements, project plans, cost estimations and execution. BI Solutions, third party integration, digital interfaces and data extraction.
  • Create and provide IT architecture design drawings and network topologies, optimizing network hardware and software to enable VMware/Server integration and upgrades.
  • Develop and maintain checkpoint SCADA solutions for real time performance analysis, using open messaging protocols such as MQ Telemetry Transport and OPC
  • Support Open Architecture and Artificial Intelligence (AI) development and deployment, collaborating with Digital and Aviation industry teams.
  • Work with the APM Product Support Team on the implementation and continued development of Condition Based Monitoring systems.
  • Develop and implement automation test cases and scripts for validation of Digital Networked Solutions, new product features, virtual environments and GUIs for new application development as well as previously developed code.
  • Design, develop, perform regression testing of Digital Networked Solutions through remote access, automation and manual testing to ensure products changes and features have been implemented successfully.
  • Support the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions and 3rd party tools to support technology and Service activities.
  • Identifying and managing technical problems, risks, issues and the practicalities of operations and change in a 24/7 domain, in order to meet our customers' expectations and ensure Smiths Detections' reputation as an organisation which delivers for its customers.
  • Leading by example in demonstrating a collaborative and transparent partnering approach with the customer group in support of Smiths Detections' long-term goals and strategic plans.
  • Provide support to the NW Market Operational and Strategic management team and wider Smiths Detection business, including SME support to proposals and bids for future opportunities.
  • Must be able to travel extensively to customer sites or other company locations and when not on travel, provide technical evaluation and support to Field Service and Project engineering teams when necessary.
  • Must be willing and able to work outside of normal business hours when necessary
  • Document process & procedures and create troubleshooting job aids

About You:

  • You will already be an experienced Electromechanical, Electronics or Systems Engineer, with an expert knowledge of Digital Networked Solutions and PLC automation, associated with low level industrial control systems within a volume dependent operational environment.
  • Bachelor's or associate degree qualified to a minimum of HNC in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology is essential or 5 years or more equivalent experience in Electronic or Systems Engineering roles is required. Equivalence achieved through comparative work & life experience is acceptable.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience directly involved in installation, commissioning, integration, troubleshooting or technical support activities centred on X-ray imaging systems, Automated Tray Return Systems (ATRS), digital checkpoint solutions, integrated and automated conveyor systems and other equipment, including Computed Tomography, Diffraction, IT Networks, Software and PLC programming.
  • VMWare Certified Professional or Associate (VCP) is desirable for this role.
  • Exhibit sound knowledge of VMware ESX and related technologies, with a minimum of 2 years' experience as an IT and Networks engineer, or equivalent experience in a similar role.
  • Cisco CCNA, CCNP and/or CompTIA are desirable for this role.
  • Detailed knowledge of programming and fault-finding PLCs - ideally Siemens S7,TIA or A-B, vision systems. In addition, electrical circuit diagram and fault-finding ability
  • Power Bi knowledge desirable. Proficiency in VMware associated programs and coding languages, such as Linux. Windows Server, MS IIS, SAN architecture, WebSphere, Citrix, Python, and C++.
  • Computer literacy, competency in use of all programs within MS Office Suite and experience of specialized remote access or condition-based monitoring software solutions.
  • Proven structured problem-solving methods and experience of engineering process change management, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of Project & Risk Management, such as Prince2 or APMP
  • Proven ability to train and mentor others
  • A strong orientation for customer focus and teamwork will be required.
