An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, skilled and highly-motivated Band 6 physiotherapist to join the Trauma & Orthopaedics Physiotherapy Team at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust.

The Trauma & Orthopaedic service at UCLH is a busy department, working over different sites; Trauma Orthopaedics in the UCLH main building and Elective Orthopaedics in the new elective centre at Grafton Way Building. The team is led by over 20 consultants who specialise in a range of elective and trauma work. UCLH provides first-class acute and specialist services across 8 sites. As part of our continued vision to deliver top-quality patient care, excellent education and word-class research, UCLH will be increasing the provision of surgical services by opening a new hospital.

You will be part of the Orthopaedic therapy team, which provides services across a number of specialist areas. These include: inpatient Trauma & Elective Orthopaedics, Day Surgery, Joint School and the Virtual Fracture Clinic. Sound orthopaedic assessment, treatment and discharge planning skills are essential.

Applicants should ideally have a minimum of 6 months previous experience as a senior physiotherapist in orthopaedics, excellent communication, IT and organisation skills and be able to work flexibly within a busy team. Applicants will need to demonstrate the ability to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and those with a variety of complex needs.

Main duties of the job

To provide an advanced musculoskeletal physiotherapy service to trauma and elective orthopaedic patients admitted to the inpatient wards and day surgery unit at UCLH.

To provide advanced assessment and acute injury management advice within the virtual fracture clinic, with training and support.

To work as an autonomous practitioner to formulate a diagnosis and management programme according to assessment findings, and to develop and maintain high standards of patient care.

To provide advanced neuro-musculoskeletal physiotherapy assessments and treatments for trauma and orthopaedic patients, often with diverse, complex or multiple pathologies and presentations.

To provide advanced assessment, treatment & discharge planning pre- and post-operatively, to minimise length of stay and optimise patient rehabilitation.

To provide high quality, evidence-based care to service users.

To provide experienced advice, guidance and information within this area to patients, health and social care professionals, carers, relatives and other non-professionals.

To deputise for senior physiotherapy staff within the Virtual Fracture Clinic and the inpatient physiotherapy team as required.

To clinically supervise and guide the professional work of less experienced physiotherapists, support staff and students as appropriate, while complying with professional and departmental standards of practice

Person specification

KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria

  • Degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy
  • HCPC Registration as a Physiotherapist
  • Awareness of current evidence pertaining to physiotherapy interventions within the acute orthopaedic setting

Desirable criteria

  • Member of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
  • Member of a relevant orthopaedic Specialist Interest Group

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working as a qualified physiotherapist within the national health service; including experience in orthopaedics, and 3 or more of the following areas: - Respiratory - Surgery - General medicine - Neurology - Musculoskeletal outpatients - Care of the Elderly - Rehabilitation
  • Experience of working as a Band 6 physiotherapist in an NHS acute inpatient orthopaedic setting

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working as a Band 6 physiotherapist in an NHS musculoskeletal outpatients setting

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of a clear understanding of the role of the Physiotherapist in an acute orthopaedic setting
  • Evidence of clear understanding of core physiotherapy skills and processes
  • Evidence of sound clinical knowledge and well established assessment and treatment skills
  • Evidence of effective discharge planning skills, including liaising with MDT colleagues and appropriate support agencies
  • Evidence of an understanding of multi-disciplinary issues and knowledge of the skills required to work efficiently and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, including prioritisation and delegation
  • Competent IT skills

COMMUNICATION

  • A good command of both written and spoken English
  • Evidence of an understanding of the skills required ensuring effective communication
