Senior (PHP) Software Engineer

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

Role: Senior (PHP) Software Engineer I

Location: Soho Square, London Office / Hybrid

Reporting to: Engineering Manager

The Role

We are on a mission to make home moving easier and simpler. Home movers across the UK spend more than a billion minutes on Rightmove each month and our website and apps receive over 140 million visits per month. Joining the Reviews Team in Rightmove, you'll make this mission possible by giving consumers confidence in their move through reviews.

The Reviews team was formed following the acquisition of a property reviews portal, HomeViews, in February 2024. This is a new and exciting area for Rightmove and offers a unique opportunity to continue to grow and improve the HomeViews product offering, while also forging innovation in the Rightmove platform using reviews.

At Rightmove we work in autonomous cross-functional teams using Agile processes. Each team owns a part of the Rightmove experience made up of design, product, engineering and testing specialists. You will collaborate to ensure we deliver quality solutions that satisfy millions of users, thousands of agents and hundreds of passionate Rightmovers. You will be responsible for defining solutions to business and technical problems in a way which ensures maintainability, scalability and high-performance standards.

With the HomeViews tech stack in PHP and the Rightmove platform in JAVA, we are looking for someone with a strong foundation in PHP but who is keen to learn JAVA with the support of our team (or maybe you have some experience in this already).

What you'll be doing:

  • Developing features and enhancements for our applications using PHP, Laravel, Postgres, and Redis, with a focus on maintainability, scalability, and performance.
  • Collaborating closely with the team to solve complex technical challenges and contribute to architectural decisions that shape our products.
  • Participating in sprint planning and providing input on the features that deliver the most value to our users.
  • Conducting code reviews and actively engaging in constructive debates to uphold high standards of software quality.
  • Exploring and advocating for the adoption of emerging technologies that align with our long-term vision.
  • Working in an Agile environment, delivering iteratively while remaining adaptable to shifting priorities and new tools.

What we're looking for:

  • Extensive experience in software engineering, particularly with PHP and modern frameworks like Laravel. (Bonus points if you've had exposure to Java or are excited to learn it as we transition towards new technologies.)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically about system architecture and design patterns.
  • A passion for engineering excellence that transcends any specific programming language. You're focused on delivering well-crafted, efficient solutions.
  • Advocacy for testing best practices, with a deep understanding of the importance of automated testing (TDD).
  • Solid foundation in object-oriented programming (OOP) principles, and familiarity with domain-driven design (DDD) and hexagonal architecture is a plus.
  • A collaborative mindset-you're not afraid to ask questions, seek feedback, and leverage the collective knowledge of the team.
  • Enthusiasm for performance optimization and a keen interest in how live applications behave and how users interact with them.
  • Initiative to improve team processes and workflows, and a desire to stay ahead of the curve by exploring the latest technologies and methodologies.
  • A strong sense of ownership and accountability for both personal work and team deliverables, always striving to raise the bar in everything you do.
