We are looking for a motivated qualified Senior Perfusion Scientist to join our friendly team of around 20 colleagues of Perfusionists and Surgical Care Practitioners. We are one of the few Centres in the UK to deliver Adult, Paediatric and ECMO services, which will provide you with a vast range of skills and experiences.

You will be a qualified, autonomous practitioner who is keen to participate in all aspects of the service and able to deliver a wide-ranging and comprehensive extra-corporeal life support service to patients undergoing open heart surgery and/or other related procedures. You will use a broad range of vital, complex and specialised procedures requiring skilled performance with a high level of individual responsibility applied to a variety of situations.

The Centre currently undertakes 1000 adult and 250 neonatal/paediatric cases, along with 100 neonatal, paediatric and adult ECMO's and IABP support. We work together as a team and participation in an on call rota is essential.

Training will be given where needed and we encourage applications from overseas candidates.

Main duties of the job

Set up, prime and run cardiopulmonary bypass equipment for cardiac surgery procedures, according to the perfusion procedures and protocols and play a full role in the routine cardiac surgery programme.

Facilitate the provision of a transport ECMO service along with the accompanied maintenance, troubleshooting and staff training associated with this role.

Ensure the provision of extracorporeal life support systems, ventricular assist devices, haemoconcentration, cell salvage and Intra Aortic Balloon Counterpulsation.

Assist in formulating policies for the smooth running of the Clinical Perfusion Department and make recommendations for improvement and development.

Ensure the continued maintenance and servicing of clinical equipment pertinent to cardiac surgery.

Take part in the provision of training perfusion students and other staff groups when required.

Take part in an on call rota for emergency service provision.

Procure disposable/non-disposable equipment for the department.

Be active in the ongoing research programme in the Perfusion Department

Provide clinical and scientific advice, and interpretation of results to clinicians throughout the Trust and to external agencies.

Draw on knowledge of a range of theories to inform practice. Assist in developing strategies for the management and delivery of care for the patient group.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY RESULT AREAS

Lead service development projects and line manage staff.

Support a safety and quality culture, including the ISO 9001 quality system.

Conduct quality and clinical audits.

Ensure that adequate measures are in place to provide assurance that equipment and procedures are providing safe and accurate radiotherapy.

Investigate and resolve complex problems on highly complex, expensive (>£1 million) patient-critical radiotherapy and associated equipment, determining the exact cause of subtle or non-reproducible equipment faults.

Perform and supervise radiation dosimetry work for external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy, ensuring all external beam treatment units are kept in calibration, in accordance with national codes of practice and local protocols.

Resolve problems with the checking and implementation of highly complex, patient specific, radiotherapy treatment plans.

Supervise the commissioning of new and modified radiotherapy equipment.

Ensure the accuracy of any data gathered during equipment commissioning. Take an active role in projects to deliver complex new and amended radiotherapy equipment and systems.

Undertake design, research and development projects relevant to Radiotherapy Physics.

Maintain HPC registration and MPE certification.

Keep abreast of the latest technical and scientific developments and their applications in medical and associated fields. Attend suitable seminars and courses as part of training and personal development and to further the work of the Department.

Participate in the routine maintenance and calibration of dosimetry equipment.

Participate in the on-call Duty Physicist rota.

Perform and check planning of brachytherapy treatments.

Service Delivery & Development

Carry out duties in compliance with the relevant legal requirements and safety regulations, with which the post holder must be conversant.

The nature of the job requires that the post holder works their contracted hours in a flexible manner, e.g. there may be occasional late evenings.

Governance(E.g, CQC, Audit)

Ensure all activities are carried out within a quality framework and conform to Statutory Regulations such as IRR and IR(ME)R, approved Codes of Practice and Local Safety Rules.

Patient/Customer Service

The post holder is required to promote a professional image and must appear smartly dressed for duty.

Research

The postholder undertakes specific research and development activities and keeps abreast of new developments in the field of radiotherapy.

They will provide support (with MPE and general scientific input) to radiotherapy clinical trials at UHL.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • BSc in Perfusion Science/ PgDip in Perfusion Science / MSc in Perfusion Science / Society of Perfusionists Accreditation Examination. LCCP/Overseas applicants require a primary perfusion qualification plus evidence of 75 unsupervised clinical cases.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Preferably 3 years post qualification

Desirable criteria

  • Paediatric Experience although training will be given.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • A good knowlegde of Cardiac and Perfusion Techniques

Desirable criteria

  • A knowledge of ECMO procedures as well as Paediatric procedures
