Job overview

Based at Epsom General Hospital, SWLEOC is a partnership commissioned by four South West London acute hospital Trusts and provides routine and complex elective and non-urgent emergency orthopaedic surgery services to patients aged over 18.

SWLEOC was rated as Outstanding by the CQC in their 2016 report.

SWLEOC is one the largest hip and knee replacement centre in the UK and one of the largest in the world. It performs around 6,300 procedures per year with some patients referred from around the UK and internationally. Sub-specialties include hip and knee arthroplasty and revisions surgery, a young adult hip service, shoulder and elbow soft tissue and arthroplasty surgery and spinal surgery.

There is a 27-bed inpatient wards and a 24-bed Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), which includes a Day Case Unit, all of which are covered by consultant intensivists. There is an outpatients department for clinics and research clinics. There are six laminar flow operating theatres.

The fellow will be under the supervision and direction of Mr Ajeya Adhikari (AA) and Professor David H. Sochart (DHS), as well as the Academic Surgical Unit, including Professor Deiary Kader (DK) and Mr. Vipin Asopa (VA). The fellow will also have the opportunity to work with the other knee and hip surgeons attending SWLEOC, including the Revision Team from St. George's Hospital. All are highly experienced surgeons and trainers caring for a wide range of adult knee and hip conditions.

The appointment is designed for an individual who has completed a Higher Surgical Training programme, or is within 3 months of their CCT (with the approval of their training programme director) and wishes to gain specialist surgical experience in hip and knee arthroplasty (primary, complex primary and revision arthroplasty, including navigation) and knee ligament surgery, prior to applying for a Consultant post.

The post is full time, 40 hours per week, and does not include any on call commitments. The opportunity for additional work on Saturdays is also available on an ad hoc basis.
