Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Ensure timely, efficient and courteous provision of the agreed standards of MRI service, taking account of the patient's clinical, physical and cultural needs. .

  • Monitor and adjust work priorities in conjunction with other professionals to take into account changing demands on the diagnostic service
  • Work with Radiologists, Cardiologists and other Health Care Professionals to optimise standards of service delivery within the unit.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that all data inputs on the Radiology Information System (RIS) are entered correctly for both patient record integrity and statistical evaluation
  • Ensure all necessary images are sent to Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS)

Communication

  • Receive patients and staff to the MRI unit and deal with any enquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Communicate with the referrer where clarification is required regarding the most clinically appropriate imaging.
  • Deal sensitively with patients or carers under emotional stress, including the terminally ill and bereaved.
  • Communicate with patients and carers to ensure informed consent for examinations.
  • To be sensitive to patient anxiety regarding the claustrophobic nature of the MR scanner and work to enable patients to overcome their anxiety so that the examination can be performed.
  • Communicate effectively with patients with communication difficulties and cognitive Anticipate where communication difficulties might make completion of a safety checklist impossible and implement alternative methods to ensure that patient safety is maintained.
  • Ensure patients receive timely and accurate information about their examination, and ensure urgent findings are communicated in the appropriate way to referrer

Knowledge, training and Experience

  • Be accountable for own professional actions and work within codes of Practice and Professional Guidelines.
  • To assess the clinical justification of MR referrals, in line with both national regulations and local protocols.
  • Be competent in the utilisation of complex and specialised imaging equipment.
  • Operate advanced software on MRI scanners requiring in-depth anatomical, pathological and technical knowledge.
  • To modify protocols and parameters where appropriate to optimise diagnostic information in view of clinical indications, imaging findings.
  • Act as patient and staff advocate in MR safety issues.
  • To be fully aware of the potential bio-effects of MRI and to ensure that the scanner is operated within safe limits at all times.
  • To be familiar with safety procedures (quench, fire, cardiac arrest) which are specific to the MRI Environment.
  • To review all scans and ensure that supplementary imaging is not required prior patient departure from the unit.
  • To ascertain patient suitability for contrast media and Buscopan
  • To perform intravenous cannulation and safely administer contrast media and Buscopan using a pressure injector or manual injection
  • To act with delegated authority as a referrer for limited plain film radiograph

Physical skills and Effort

  • Ensure the safe transfer of patients and equipment in line with manual handling guidelines and appropriate risk assessment.
  • Assist with changing and personal care of patients as necessary.
  • Physically position patients accurately for each examination to ensure that image quality, patient comfort and patient safety are constantly maintained, adapting techniques in accordance with the patient's needs.
  • To ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised where Particular attention must be paid to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linen

Management Responsibility

  • Organise and manage an agreed workload with support from other health care professionals and senior staff as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving approach to issues arising at a local level, evaluating the need to refer problems to the modality Superintendent or Line Manager.
  • Ensure that all Trust and local policies, protocols and procedures are adhered to by colleagues .
  • Maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas within the Trust.
  • Share knowledge and skills developed with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Supervise the work of Junior Radiographers and Students.
  • Responsible for daily resource management within the unit.
  • Observe a duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital.
  • Demonstrate a level of competency in line with King's Radiography Competency Framework and be responsible for maintaining one's own personal development.
  • As part of individual professional responsibility actively lead and participate in the departmental Quality Assurance Programme.
  • Deal with complaints in accordance with Trust complaints.
  • Report any Adverse Incidents .
  • Ensure Clinical Governance protocols are complied with and corrective actions taken where necessary.
  • Aid the Modality Superintendent with standard setting and policy formation for the MRI.
  • Assess the needs of patients and plan the delivery of imaging and care around these needs within the MRI
  • In line with the Trust Appraisal process undertake the appraisals and competency assessment of Junior Radiographic.
  • Assist with recruitment and selection of Junior Radiographic staff and Assistant Practitioners.
  • Ensure appropriate levels of stock and consumables are maintained within the unit.
  • Ensure appropriate action is taken in instances of equipment breakdown or fault.

Professional & Practice Development, Training & Education

  • Act both as role model and clinical expert to facilitate development of others through example and education.
  • Demonstrate, maintain and update skills and knowledge of evolving practice and legislative requirements.
  • Actively lead in the training and development of Junior Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and Student Radiographers, assuming professional responsibility for their work.
  • Review, develop and write protocols with a view to improving service Contribute to service improvements and re-design in line with local service strategies.

.Responsible for individual CPD. Demonstrate a keen interest in the department's CPD programme, participating in both in- house and external events as well as private study.
Research & Audit

  • Perform scans as part of research Appreciate the importance of adhering to research standards, protocols and documentation.
  • Work with others healthcare professionals in the development of research
  • Contribute to practice development in reaction to the findings of audit and recent evidence, implement recommendations, and monitor their effectiveness.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration.
  • BSc Diagnostic Radiography (or equivalent).

Desirable criteria

  • Post graduate qualification in MRI

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Post graduate training and substantial work experience in MRI, with evidence of recent CPD relevant to the role.
  • Significant Experience in performing wide range of scans including breast, liver and gynae

Desirable criteria

  • Post graduate work experience in CT
  • Experience in advanced imaging techniques in MRI e.g. cardiac MRI

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to present oral and written information effectively.
