Job overview

The post holder will be a member of the multi-disciplinary CAMHS Service (formally
CAMHS/ Springleigh Child & family Therapy Services) and will be based within the
YJS. This post will be focused on early intervention and ensuring that groups of
vulnerable children and young people have access to mental health advice and
support. The post holder is responsible for providing mental health assessments
and brief psychotherapeutic interventions and assisting in navigating local mental
health systems for children and young people who are involved with the YJS. The
role will also involve providing advice, training and consultation to other members of
YJS, parent (s) / carer (s) and other agencies. The post will provide a close link
between CAMHS and YJS.

Main duties of the job

To ensure high quality mental health assessment of children and young people
referred to YJS.
• To identify the need for assessment through liaison with the Police, Courts,
Probation, YJS, CAMHS and other appropriate agencies for young offenders who
may also be experiencing mental health issues.
• To provide access to a range of quality psychotherapeutic interventions in
accordance with individual assessed need. This will include the assessment,
planning, implementation and evaluation of a variety of therapeutic approaches
either alone or as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).
• To deliver highly specialised and therapeutic input to children and young people
referred to the team.
• Work as a co-therapist where appropriate with other members of the MDT.
• To be responsible for and manage a defined complex caseload and undertake
case management responsibilities within the caseload

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To identify and develop strategies to manage risk to the child / young person and
others in line with Pennine Care and CAMHS and YJS procedures and protocols.
• To liaise closely with a wide range of agencies regarding individual care
packages and to promote awareness of child and adolescent mental health
issues within these agencies.
• Undertake liaison and joint work with other agencies.
• To act as appropriate adult to children / young people who have offended and
who may also have a mental health issue.
• To provide information around young offenders to the court as necessary and to
attend court in order to provide support to the young person.
• To provide assessments to those young people who may need to be diverted out
of the criminal justice system and present those cases at the Mentally Vulnerable
Offenders Panel.
• To give advice and support to the manager of the Youth Justice Service in terms
of the development of services to meet the mental health needs of young
offenders.
• To provide consultation and training on a wide range of children / young people's
emotional health and well-being issues to professionals from a range of services
including GP's, Early Help and Primary Care Services, Adult Mental Health
Services, Social Care and Education Services.
• To engage in and deliver managerial and clinical supervision, including with
appropriate consent, recording and reviewing of live clinical work.
• Ensure collection of relevant information required by Pennine Care NHS
Foundation Trust.
• To routinely monitor effectiveness of clinical work by the use of Routine Outcome
Measures (ROM) and where outcomes are not improving for children, young
people and families to engage in clinical review via peer review meetings and
supervision.
• To contribute to the YJS duty rota and to work flexibly (including occasional
weekends).

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Professional qualifications relevant to work in child and adolescent mental health e.g. nursing, social work clinical psychology to masters level or equivalent experience.
  • Specialist post qualification training in psychological therapy with children and families to at least equivalent of a post graduate diploma level
  • Accreditation with the appropriate accrediting bodies governing the specific modality (e.g. BABCP, IY)

Desirable criteria

  • Additional post graduate qualifications relevant to child mental health
  • Additional accredited training

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working with children, young people who have been involved with the youth justice system.
  • Experience of working with children, young people and their families presenting with mental health concerns / problems
  • Experience of working in a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) setting
  • Managing a caseload
  • Experience of providing evidence based psychological therapy to children and young people and their families
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision and line management to team members
  • Experience of using ROM
  • Experience of teaching and liaising with other professional groups
  • Experience in developing formulations
  • Significant experience working in a multi-agency context

Desirable criteria

  • Working in a service where agreed targets are in place demonstrating

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Theoretical approach and understanding child and young people's mental health and development
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and government policy relating to children and young people's mental health
  • Child protection knowledge and practice
  • Specific theoretical knowledge related to therapeutic speciality
  • Understanding of principles and methods of clinical audit research and service evaluation
  • Understanding of current multi-agency landscape including public sector reform

  • Organisational, time management, report writing and record keeping skills

Work Related Circumstances

Essential criteria

  • Use of a car or access to a means of mobility to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs

  • Appointments to regulated and controlled activities require an enhanced DBS disclosure.

Disclosure Barring Certificate check

All of our new starters, who are appointed to a post which requires a Disclosure Barring Certificate check (DBS), will be recharged for the full cost of the check (DBS checks for volunteers are free of charge).

An enhanced DBS check costs £38 and a standard check costs £18 (plus an administration charge of £3.50). If you are a substantive member of staff, the full amount will be taken from your first month's salary.

If you are a member of staff on our bank, you will need to repay the full amount from your first salary.

We encourage you to register with the DBS update service at an annual cost of £13 (this is mandatory for bank staff).
