Band 4

A Senior Medical Secretary opportunity (Band 4) is now available within the Urology Secretariat, within the Division of Surgery.

Main duties of the job

This is a highly diverse, demanding but rewarding role. It is essential that the successful applicant has a recognised secretarial qualification, or has sufficient proven medical secretarial experience, and qualified to a minimum of RSA Stage III (or equivalent).

Applicants must have a flexible approach to working practices; have excellent touch typing/word processing skills and the ability to work as part of a team. Knowledge of medical terminology is an essential requirement, as is significant secretarial experience in a clinical environment, as defined in the person specification along with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will be required to provide a highly efficient medical administrative service to the Urology Clinical Team and will be required to possess knowledge and understanding of the Trust Access Policy, as they will be responsible for and oversee the RTT for the department in accordance with Trust guidelines.

Flexible working may be required in order to meet the needs of the service.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Typing Qualification RSA III or equivalent
  • Microsoft Office
  • Good general standard of literacy and numeracy

Desirable criteria

  • NVQ Level 4

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Previous digital/audio typing experience
  • Secretarial / PA experience
  • Medical terminology

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of NHS systems
  • Supervising / training junior members of staff

Skills and Competency

Essential criteria

  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and maintain concentration is a pressurised work environment
  • Ability to work on own intiative, prioritise work and consistently meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates good organisational skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive information without compromising confidentiality
  • Customer care skills including diplomacy and sensitivity.
