Job Description
The purpose of this role is to be responsible for the design, development, and implementation of
whole machine or instrument design, including mechanical systems, and sub-systems, from concept to
production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Concept generation of machines and mechanical systems - use relevant tools and techniques for generating and communicating concepts of proposed mechanical solutions to team members and stakeholders
- Detailed design generation of machines and mechanical systems - be deeply involved in the detailed design of machines and mechanical systems by using relevant tools and techniques for generating and communicating mechanical solutions to team members and stakeholders.
- Machine and mechanical system verification - make judgements on suitable material selection, components and methods of construction. Identify weak points in designs, predict failure modes and provide solutions. Undertake design for assembly, manufacturing and serviceability reviews and make design changes where necessary
- Create technical specifications of end-products - produce appropriate technical specifications based upon required criteria of a product or system (i.e. mechanical, process, environmental, financial, safety). Specify suitable components and systems (procured or manufactured) as required
- Generate CAD models of designs, along with associated part and assembly, drawings, and assembly instructions - use 3D CAD package (such as Creo) to model parts and assemblies of mechanical systems, displaying good-practice modelling principles
- Use relevant prototyping, manufacturing methodologies, and material selection to test, build, and validate designs - build and test designs, using relevant prototyping/manufacturing techniques to validate applicability. Create and lead experiments, and where required, provide recommendations and solutions for the end-product backed-up with documented test results
- Adhere to relevant safety and environmental standards along with legislation related to the design of machinery - develop products that satisfy internal company standards and meet required safety and environmental standards. Be conversant with local, national and EC legislation related to the design of machines and their use.
- Ensure work is documented to a high-standard - document designs, experiments, user manuals, safety documentation, to a high-standard for various stakeholders (management, team members, end users, etc)
- Identify, communicate and mitigate areas of risk from a mechanical standpoint - highlight development risks that have impact to technical, financial, and schedule deliveries and develop mitigation solutions
- Support Post Development Engineering activities - undertake engineering updates and enhancements via engineering change notice to current products that have been released for production
- Support and mentor junior engineers - support the technical development of junior engineers through coaching and mentoring
- Promote and assist with the development of standards - support the development of internal standards and ways of working
- Act as technical project lead - technically lead projects where required and provide project management
- Line management - line-management duties may be a part of this role as required
Qualifications
- Minimum: BEng/BSc in mechanical, or related, engineering discipline
- Preferred : Preferred: MSc /MEng in a Mechanical engineering discipline
- Significant experience of mechanical design
- Experience of product development lifecycle (cradle to grave)
- Experience of developing complex mechanical systems for high-precision products
- Experience of integrated electro-mechanical systems, high speed mechanics and special purpose
machinery - Designing for compliance to global standards (i.e. safety and environmental standards)
- 3D Computer Aided Design (solid modelling, surface modelling, assemblies, drawings) in Creo or similar
- Excellent communication, technical leadership and interpersonal skills
- Excellent teamwork

- Windchill PLM or similar
- Agile Development Principles
- Pneumatic systems design
- Rapid prototyping techniques (3D printing, SLA, SLS,
- etc)
- Experience in project management
