This role is for a senior engineering manager, with significant experience and expertise in managing manufacturing and installations for an operational and evolving science facility.

Working under the supervision of a group leader, you will have a high degree of independence to oversee the primary ISIS mechanical workshop, lead installation work packages as part of multimillion pound projects and manage a team of engineering technicians responsible for reactive and routine maintenance of the ISIS accelerator.

You will have a proven track record of managing health and safety for large installations, including application of Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations, and managing work in controlled radiation areas.

You will be responsible for the main ISIS workshop. You will have in-depth, specialist technical skills and knowledge of manufacturing methods to take full advantage of the modern workshop. You will need to maintain an outlook of future needs of the ISIS facility, to provide solutions to enhance accelerator performance, to advise designers of manufacturing practicalities, and to advance engineering capability through manufacturing research. You will have a strong knowledge of traditional and modern manufacturing methods. Working with your group leader, you will be responsible for developing the workshop capability to optimise workflow and to meet future needs. You will be able to present compelling arguments for resources to fulfil your vision to support the ISIS mission. You should have an awareness of the other workshop facilities within STFC and within the local area to be able to advise project work across ISIS on the best route to manufacture.

You will manage a team of approximately ten technicians at varying stages of career, leading their training and career development. You will have mature interpersonal skills to support the mixed team both personally and professionally. Supporting the STFC apprentice scheme will be an advantage to inspire and train the next generation of engineering technicians.

You are expected to participate in development activities to allow them to support their group leader and assume a higher level of influence, and to enable you to effectively be a group leader.

Person Specification

The following criteria will be assessed at either shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both stages (S&I)

  • Comprehensive experience of working in a mechanical manufacturing or engineering field (S)
  • Proven track record of managing health and safety at work, supporting, and developing a team of engineering technicians. Involvement in apprentices training is an advantage (S&I)
  • Demonstrate strong problem solving and decision-making skills. (S&I)
  • Be able to clearly describe their contributions to technical projects that showcase their technical background and achievements (S&I)
  • Demonstrable in-depth, specialist technical skills and knowledge of manufacturing methods and contribution towards continuous improvement (I)
  • Capable of developing business cases for strategic change (I)
  • Progress the implementation of the Groups obsolescence program and sustainability strategy with the Group leader. (I)
  • An understanding of own work within the wider context of ISIS and STFC (I)
  • Self-motivated with effective communication skills with staff at all levels.(I)

As part of the role you will be entering radiologically designated areas and participate in/assist in out-of-hours breakdowns.
