We have four critical care units on three sites and three pathways: University College Hospital (UCH) is a general unit with 35 beds (funded to 23) taking patients from our busy emergency department, following emergency surgery and from the wards, as well as tertiary referrals from across the UK and abroad. We have two elective surgical PACUs, on T06 at UCH (10 beds) and at Westmoreland Street which has 9 beds and takes mostly high risk, complex surgical patients. We also have Grafton Way building Critical Care Unit, which is a state-of-the-art cancer facility and has 10 beds primarily taking haematology patients.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an exceptional nurse leader to join our ambitious, motivated, and dynamic team. You must be an experienced critical care nurse with demonstrable leadership skills and experience who always puts patients and staff at the centre of all you do.
You will be part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, including the country's leading critical care research and development team, the authors of Europe's best-selling critical care nursing textbook, experts in quality improvement and human factors, and a department which excels in critical care nursing education. We are also award winners internally and externally, this year we won the Nursing Times award for our continued ambition to be a truly inclusive department.
The post holder will also contribute to the promotion of UCLH as a centre of excellence for nursing practice and research, fostering a culture that values staff, recognises achievement and enables career progression and succession planning.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First level registered nurse
- Educated to master's level or equivalent
- Leadership Qualification
- Management qualification or equivalent
- Teaching qualification • Extensive knowledge acquired through post graduate specialist training in Critical Care Nursing
Experience

- Broad clinical experience in an acute hospital setting
- Significant experience of operational management of a complex range of services within an acute setting.
- Significant experience in a nursing leadership role at senior level (matron or equivalent) in a large and complex organisation.
- Experience of effectively leading and implementing transformational change and delivering projects in a complex organisation.
- Experience of teaching, training and development and implementing evidence based Practice / nursing research in practice.
- Demonstrates experience of negotiating and presenting cohesive arguments.
- Required to participate in Trust Silver on call rota.
