Job description

This role will lead and manage a team providing legal advice and support to the Environment Agency covering all aspects of Employment Law and Information Law.
You will have extensive experience of employment law including the conduct of Employment Tribunal proceedings. You and your team will become involved in all aspect of employment law ranging from disciplinary and grievance cases through to industrial action and TUPE.
The team also provide legal advice and guidance on how to handle requests made under the Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act and the Environmental Information Regulations.
When decisions are challenged, this may include responding to complaints lodged with the Information Commissioner's Office and the conduct of litigation in the First tier and Upper Tribunal.
Advice is given to all parts of the Environment Agency to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
You will develop and maintain relationships at all levels and work closely with our internal clients, Human Resources and staff.
As with all Senior Managing Lawyer posts you will also be required to own, manage and deliver agreed issues on behalf of the Legal and Audit Services Leadership Group.
The team
The team comprises of six lawyers who are based at locations across England.
The role is part of the Legal and Audit Services Leadership team. As a strong lawyer and leader, you will take the lead for legal services in advising on employment law and information law and maintain strong relationships with others across the organisation.
Experience/skills required
You will have:
• Experience of managing and leading a team;
• Experience of handling complex technical issues;
• Extensive experience of advising on one or more of the following relevant specialist legal areas: (1) Employment Law (2) Information Law;
• Significant experience of advising on Public law and Governance issues relevant to Employment law;
• Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation or must be able to get up to speed rapidly;
• Confidence and experience to assimilate a new area of environmental or other area of law quickly;
• The ability to write detailed legal briefings on legal topics for use at director/board/government level, and to compose correspondence in response to parliamentary questions;
• The confidence and ability to brief orally at director/board/government level;
• Experience of working effectively at a national level and/or with government (where appropriate).
