About the Role:
As the Senior Manager, OA Commercial, you will play a key role in shaping and executing our Open Access (OA) commercial strategies, including managing Article Processing Charges (APC) and Book Processing Charges (BPCs), and driving innovative commercial initiatives to maximise our market share, accessibility, and sustainability. Reporting directly to the Director of OA Policy & Strategic Planning, this position offers a unique opportunity to influence the future of open access publishing and contribute to the growth and transition of Springer Nature's OA business.

Role Responsibilities:

OA business strategy

  • Gain a deep understanding of the dynamics influencing OA growth and transition, including aspects such as pricing, revenue per article, customer behaviour, and journal/book metrics.
  • Help quantify and explain the impact of external market and policy developments on the OA business, with a particular focus on developments impacting OA monetisation.
  • Contribute to strategic planning by applying insights on OA commercial and market dynamics to Springer Nature's OA strategy development.
  • Support the Director of OA Policy & Strategic Planning in communicating the OA strategy effectively, including development of presentations, slide decks, and business cases.

Pricing, discounts and waivers

  • Work in close collaboration with the Director of OA Policy & Strategic Planning and central pricing colleagues to strategically manage OA pricing.
  • Regularly review pricing for fully OA and hybrid journals, OA books, and chapters in partnership with the Pricing team.
  • Draft and maintain OA pricing and discounting policy documentation for internal and external audiences, including information on the company intranet and across Springer Nature websites.
  • Respond to internal queries related to pricing and requests for exceptions to established business frameworks, ensuring alignment with OA objectives.

Commercial initiatives and projects

  • Explore and implement innovative approaches to OA monetisation, including regional pricing, waivers, discount codes, value-added services, and alternative business models.
  • Develop a solid understanding of Springer Nature's payment processes and systems, along with their relationship with and potential impact on pricing and commercial initiatives.
  • Act as the contact with technology, publishing, and customer services teams on topics and initiatives related to individual OA pricing and discounts, communicating OA business requirements and collaborating to optimise author experience.

Collaboration with global and local teams

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues in OA and across wider global and local teams, exchanging information and collaborating to ensure that OA commercial strategies are cohesive, well-informed, and effectively implemented across different regions and divisions.
  • Provide OA commercial and pricing expertise to colleagues in the OA team and wider business, to help inform the development of initiatives supporting OA growth and transition.
  • Key relationships between this role/the OA team and other business units include (but aren't limited to): central pricing team, publishing teams across journals and books (global and regional), technology teams, communications and marketing teams, customer services, sales, OA operations.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

Essential

  • Proven experience in commercial roles within the publishing industry
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and translate insights into actionable strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the capability to engage and influence stakeholders across different levels.
  • Strong Powerpoint and Excel proficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage projects across functional teams.
  • Familiarity with the academic publishing landscape, including an understanding of OA policies and trends.
  • Degree or equivalent work experience

Desirable

  • Experience in open access publishing, particularly within commercial roles relating to OA pricing and business models
