About the role:

The Senior Manager, Intellectual Property will work in collaboration with the Head of IP to contribute to the strategic management and protection of LifeArc's intellectual property assets.

The role requires the Senior Manager to work independently to ensure that LifeArc maximises the value of its innovations through effective IP management, providing expert guidance on patent strategy, portfolio management, and IP-related business decisions. The role provides IP expertise to facilitate LifeArc's sustainability goals as well as protecting the Company from any associated IP risks, including loss of revenue and legal disputes.

  • Deputise for the Head of IP when is necessary.
  • Strategic IP Management: work with the Head of IP to develop and implement LifeArc's intellectual property strategy, ensuring alignment with the organisation's long-term goals and sustainability objectives.
  • IP Portfolio Oversight: work with the Head of IP to manage and optimise the IP portfolio by identifying valuable assets, assessing risks, and ensuring the protection of key innovations.
  • IP Due Diligence: Independently conduct thorough IP due diligence for business transactions, collaborations, licensing deals and funding agreements.
  • Freedom to Operate (FTO) & Patentability Assessments: Oversee FTO analyses and patentability evaluations to guide R&D, funding and investment activities and support decision-making for new technology investments.
  • IP Training & Awareness: Lead on developing and delivering training programs to internal teams, fostering a strong understanding of IP matters and the associated risk across the organisation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Lead as a strategic business partner to the Opportunity Assessment Group (OAG).
  • Innovation Capture: Work closely with scientists and researchers to identify and capture inventions, ensuring comprehensive invention harvesting activities.
  • Legal & Compliance: Ensure adherence to IP laws, policies, and best practices, supporting the Head of IP in maintaining robust IP governance frameworks.
  • The role will work with the Head of IP to ensure that all business units are aligned with LifeArc's IP policy and strategy. Must be able to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex IP issues into actionable and understandable insights.
  • Ability to influence internal stakeholders and business partner with different business units.
  • Assist the Head of IP to establish effective systems and processes to adhere to the requirements of the IP framework.
  • Mentoring and coaching the IP Analyst.

Education & experience required:

  • Relevant life sciences degree (postgraduate qualification preferred) in biological sciences, chemistry or diagnostics and preferably post graduate research qualification
  • Formal qualification in intellectual property law and IP management

Skills & abilities:

  • Proven ability to assist the development and implementation of IP strategies within the life sciences sector.
  • Extensive experience conducting IP due diligence and managing patent portfolios.
  • Strong understanding of licensing, technology transfer, and commercialisation of biopharmaceutical innovations.
  • Strong expertise in patentability, validity, and freedom to operate searches, with experience in patent databases such as PatBase, Clarivate, or similar.
