Job overview

Working as a key member of the Library and Knowledge Service (LKS) team, the Senior Library Technician will support the efficient delivery of high-quality library and information services to staff and students at CHFT. The postholder will provide comprehensive paraprofessional support across all areas of the service, including maintenance and administration of library systems, delivering teaching sessions, conducting literature searches and supporting marketing and promotion activities. The postholder will work with a high degree of autonomy, including periods of lone working, and will manage their own workload and priorities, seeking guidance from the Library Manager as required.

Main duties of the job

This is the role for you if you:

  • Enjoy working with people - This is a customer-facing role, and you'll spend much of your time supporting staff and students from across the Trust. You'll help users get the most out of our library services and provide support when things don't go to plan.
  • Have strong IT and digital skills - You'll regularly use a range of systems and tools, from creating presentations and managing the library catalogue system to conducting literature searches on bibliographic databases and supporting systematic reviews.
  • Are confident communicating with groups - This is a varied role that goes beyond the enquiry desk. You'll be involved in delivering inductions and teaching sessions, presenting at events and representing the library service at multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Have a passion for libraries - The library service is about much more than books. We support research, education and professional development across the Trust, and we're looking for someone who is keen to make a positive contribution to the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the job are to:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the library enquiry desk, ensuring efficient service delivery and resolving both routine and complex enquiries
  • Provide guidance and support to users in accessing library resources, databases and electronic systems
  • Develop, deliver and evaluate teaching sessions on information skills and literature searching to support education, research and career development
  • Conduct literature searches to support clinical and non-clinical decision making across the Trust
  • Promote and market the library service by presenting at inductions and events, visiting departments and creating promotional materials

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Minimum of NVQ Level 3, or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • Qualification in library and information studies

Knowledge, Experience & Expertise

Essential criteria

  • Previous experience working in customer focused environment
  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Good presentation and public speaking skills
  • Ability to work methodically and consistently with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including copyright and GDPR

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience working in a library or information setting
  • Previous experience delivering teaching, training or mentoring sessions

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, adjusting approach to meet audience
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team

If you are appointed to a post, information will also be transferred into the NHS Electronic Staff Records system. The Inter-Authority Transfer (IAT) process is a critical and beneficial component of ESR and following interview your previous NHS employment data, if applicable will be transferred from your current / most recent employer.

You may be required to undertake a DBS. The Trust will administer the DBS check on your behalf and will recover the cost (Enhanced £54.40, Standard £26.40 or Basic £26.40) from your salary when you commence in post (including Internal staff). You will also be required to participate in the DBS Update Service and pay the £16 cost per year. This is a condition of your employment.
