We are looking to offer a Senior Legal Counsel the opportunity to join our expanding Legal & CoSec team based in Stevenage.

About your team

You will be a member of the newly formed Legal & CoSec team, reporting to the Group General Counsel. The function provides legal, governance and compliance support and advice to the Group. You will work across all Divisions being Energy, Water, Telecoms, Transport (Rail & Aviation) and Transport (Highways) providing infrastructure sector legal expertise.

We offer a flexible working environment where hybrid working has been embedded. Ideally, you would be required to attend the Stevenage office one day per week.

As the Senior Legal Counsel, you'll get the opportunity to:

• Work closely with senior commercial stakeholders to review, negotiate and draft a range of contractual documents and provide commercially focused advice and solutions to a broad range of contractual issues.
• Work with bid teams across all Divisions to check, amend and highlight risks within client tenders and consider possible mitigations.
• Ebbed and maintain a suite of template subcontracts and supply terms and conditions for use across the Group.
• Provide ongoing project advice and support to assist commercial and operation teams in the delivery of our work. For example, matters of contractual interpretation, mitigation of delivery risks and administration of contracts.
• As well as the core work, adapt to and tackle other legal matters that arise such as supporting the resolution of potential contentious issues and aiding the understanding of the ever-changing legislative environment in which we operate.
• Work the General Counsel to:
  • provide legal training to colleagues;
  • supporting tender governance processes;
  • ensuring adequate compliance processes and procedures;
  • managing use of legal panel and controlling external spend; and
  • maintaining template agreements.
• Supporting Group activities e.g. group policies, year-end activities, M&A activities

What you'll bring?

• Qualified solicitor, educated to degree level, with 8+years PQE
• Ideally worked in-house or within a reputable private practice infrastructure team
• Solid transactional / non-contentious experience with knowledge of main standard forms of contract (primarily NEC3 and 4, Network Rail)
• Strong technical skills in contract review, drafting and negotiation
• Market and sector experience including knowledge of engineering projects and preferably exposure to public sector clients
