International Office of General Counsel

The International Office of the General Counsel (IOGC) is a growing and high-performing in-house legal team with personnel based in five countries. The team provides legal advice on a wide variety of key strategic matters and legal, regulatory and reputational issues and risks, and also supports the execution of critical business decisions made by KPMG International.

Role summary

The role will involve advising and assisting on contentious and non-contentious insurance matters. The non-contentious insurance matters will involve: (i) advising on the renewal of KPMG's global cyber and PII insurance programs as well as on D&O insurances; (ii) providing input on strategic decisions on the overall structure of the insurance arrangements; (iii) advising on policy wording; and (iv) assisting with regulatory compliance issues. The contentious insurance work will involve advising on the insurance issues and considerations in respect of PII and cyber claims and notifications. The individual will work under the supervision of a Principal/Partner Equivalent in IOGC who is a specialist insurance lawyer and in respect of the contentious work, some oversight by the Principal/Partner Equivalent in IOGC who specialise in disputes and regulatory investigations will be expected.

Key Accountabilities

  • Legal Support in respect KPMG's Global PII Program (advisory/non-contentious) to include: (i) support on insurance implications of new projects in the network; (ii) advice on policy wordings and coverage issues; (iii) supporting on the ongoing technical design of the program.
  • Legal Support in respect KPMG's Global Cyber Program (contentious and non-contentious) and other insurances to include: : (i) support on insurance implications of new projects in the network; (ii) advice on policy wordings and coverage issues; (iii) supporting on the ongoing technical design of the program.
  • Legal Support in respect of PII claims and notifications to include providing guidance on notification and ongoing reporting to insurers and guidance on related coverage issues.

Experience / Qualifications

At least 10 years PQE (or equivalent if not England and Wales qualified) experience as a qualified lawyer, although all candidates who demonstrate an ability to fulfil the role will be actively considered.

  • Excellent technical legal skills and an understanding of the business drivers affecting, and legal and regulatory risk faced by large global organisations.
  • Legal experience of advising on and negotiating insurance policies and/or advising on disputes between insurers/insureds (in each case, whether on behalf of insurers/insureds).
  • Experience of professional indemnity insurance including PII defence. Experience of cyber and/or D&O insurance would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Previous experience of advising on issues arising from compliance with local insurance regulations across the world is an advantage, but not essential.
  • Knowledge of the general process involved in placing and renewing large multinational commercial insurance programs (including the role of brokers, insurers and reinsurers). Experience of working directly within the London insurance market for an insurer or broker (via secondments or otherwise) would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, particularly with senior level global stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a highly demanding environment and deliver multiple activities where priorities can change quickly.
  • Ability to engage and deal with individuals across different functions, geographies and at varying management levels within the organisation, including senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly as part of a supportive team while taking responsibility for own work.
  • Fluency in English; additonal language skills are an advantage but are not essential.
  • An active interest in developments and innovation in the insurance market and in reflecting on how such innovation can be leveraged to support our insurance arrangements would be advantageous and the role will offer opportunity for a successful candidate to engage with external stakeholders and relationship partners in this regard.
