Job overview

An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic, suitably qualified, experienced, and self-motivated candidate to become a Senior Server & Cloud Infrastructure Engineer.

As a key member of the Server & Cloud Infrastructure team within the Digital Data and Technology department, the successful candidate joins a diverse and growing department playing a pivotal role in the modernisation and continued development of the server and cloud infrastructure. They will also provide 3rd line technical support in specialist areas e.g Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, Linux, Active Directory, virtualisation technologies, anti-virus products, backup and archiving solutions, server hardware and monitoring and cloud platform development and support.

BCU invests heavily in its workforce, the successful candidate will have access to regular training opportunities included industry recognised certifications and the option to join the British Computer Society. The role will primarily work remotely from home; however, the candidate's base will be either Abergele Hospital, Bangor Hospital or Wrexham Maelor Hospital. They will also be able to attend any BCU site where physical server infrastructure, or associated appliances, resides as and when necessary and at short notice in line with working practices.

Main duties of the job

This role includes proactively developing and maintaining the Server and Cloud infrastructure at BCU, as well as specialist applications used for clinical, and business needs within the Health Board. Providing technical support within a 3rd line Technical Team function.

This is a senior technical engineering role within the department, working under the guidance of the Lead Engineers, and providing support and advice on all technical matters to other teams and staff in the organisation. Regular communication with 3rd party providers will also be required.

As well as the day to day running and maintenance aspects of the job the role will also be expected to investigate complex issues using a high degree of expert knowledge, and to provide advice and input to wider programmes and projects within BCU.

Ideally, the post holder should have a relevant degree or industry recognised qualification(s), or equivalent experience in some of the following areas;

  • Microsoft Intune and Endpoint Configuration Manager (SCCM) or equivalent desktop/mobile management platform.
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop Services or Citrix Experience
  • Microsoft Endpoint Security, Defender, Bitlocker, Firewall or equivalent Endpoint Security Product
  • Microsoft Windows Server operating systems and associated services
  • Smoothwall or equivalent Web Filter Proxy
  • Scripting (PowerShell, VBS)

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Recognised higher education qualification in a computing or related discipline e.g. 1st Degree, or demonstrable equivalent industry experience working at a Senior/Specialist Engineers level.
  • A recognised advanced professional qualification in an electronic engineering/computing field such as MCSE, MCSP, Citrix Certification or VMWare Certification
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development

Desirable criteria

  • Additional industry qualifications, ICT service qualifications (e.g. ITIL).
  • Formal project management qualifications (e.g. PRINCE2).

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experienced Senior/Specialist Engineer of managing a diverse range of complex ICT systems an server infrastructure to an advanced level.
  • Experience of liaising and negotiating with staff at all levels in the determination of their IT and communications technology needs.
  • Experience of leading ICT system implementations.
  • Experience of dealing with third party suppliers.
  • Experience of supporting a range complex ICT system infrastructure technologies.
  • Advanced ICT system infrastructure trouble-shooting experience.

  • Ability to initiate and respond positively to change, and the ability to learn from experience.

  • Ability to analyse complex and multi-stranded technical problems that may have no precedent, in order to initiate the most appropriate corrective action.
  • Must have advanced IT/Keyboard skills demonstrable across Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
  • Ability to direct and conduct research into ICT issues, systems and products as required.
  • Ability to assimilate highly complex information over a range of technical specialities.
  • Ability to effectively prioritise and execute tasks in a high pressure environment.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Possesses highly developed and specialist IT Systems knowledge gained by experience and training in the following area. Data Centre Technologies, Server Hardware, Microsoft Operating Systems Technologies, Microsoft Server System Technologies (e.g. Exchange, SQL, SharePoint), Virtualisation Technologies (e.g. VMware, Citrix)
  • Knowledge of relevant ICT industry trends and developments.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of NHS Wales and LHB information and communications technology standards and requirements.

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of both local and national NHS ICT developments and strategies.
  • Full knowledge of NHS IT security policies and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of organisations goals and objectives.
