Senior Instrumentation & Control Engineer working within the organisations Global Technical Support Office, with this role specifically based in Aberdeen, United Kingdom (UK).

We are currently looking for an experienced engineer to play a key role working within the Electrical & Control Team, carrying out design appraisal of complex instrumentation and control systems, giving pragmatic advice to colleagues and clients and also to mentor less experienced colleagues.
What are you going to do?

The Electrical & Control Team within the organisations Global Technical Support Office has a strong specialisation in design review of Electrical, Instrumentation & Control Systems for marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables facilities, which are referred to in accordance with Statutory Regulations, Flag State Requirements and Classification Rules and International Standards.

The work the Electrical & Control Team carries-out has helped cement LR's position as one of the leading classification societies in the maritime industry and key Certification provided for products on marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables sectors facilities.

Working with a global team of engineers, field surveyors, and clients to propose innovative solutions to problems, and advise on the time and cost of work involved. Continuous focus on professional development, actively seeking out opportunities to enhance expertise and keep skills fully up to date.
Reporting to the Team Lead the 'Key Responsibilities' are:

  • To carry out design appraisal of offshore industry instrumentation and control arrangements and systems against Codes and Standards and Regulations and Client project requirements, within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • To provide sound Technical and Regulatory guidance to Clients during the design and construction phase and participate in meetings or workshops where required.
  • To perform assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, research or development work within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • To apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.
  • To produce the deliverable within the agreed broad parameters in an appropriate format and take responsibility to review other employee's work as requested.
  • To discuss / present the deliverable with the internal / external client at a senior level and be able to suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
  • Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
  • To assess / recommend the time / value of the work to be undertaken for an internal / external client within an agreed fee / cost structure and within the commercial aspects of the contract.
  • To make recommendations based on internal / external client feedback to assist in service delivery improvement and to help build the business.
  • To contribute to internal / external client management as appropriate.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Conduct occasional site visits at various ship yards, client sites, testing laboratories, or production facilities as required to successfully complete projects.
  • To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • To mentor / coach other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
  • To undertake project management where applicable including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.

The successful applicant should have:

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Electrical / Process Control / Instrumentation & Control Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of working experience in a related Instrumentation & Control Engineering area.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution with Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) or similar designation, or eligible and working towards such PE / CEng status.
  • Possess flexible attitude, effective interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills, and can provide technical, commercial, and people communication.
  • Proficiency in English language, exceptional communication skills, alertness and attention to detail, including technical report writing, having the ability to adapt and work to tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Classification / Certification / Verification is desirable.
  • Exposure to Consultancy, Concept / FEED / Detailed Design and EPC projects.
  • Working knowledge of Instrumentation & Control Engineering for the marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables sectors and able to participate in multi-discipline Engineering Design Reviews and provide all necessary I&C and Telecoms engineering input and support to close out of actions.
  • In depth knowledge and experience of Fire & Gas Detection System, Emergency Shutdown Systems, Distributed Control System (DCS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Functional Safety Management, High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), Cyber Security, Telecommunication systems, Equipment in Hazardous Areas, Risk Assessment methodologies including SIL, LOPA and HAZOP.
  • Exposure in the New Energy/Low Carbon / Energy Transition space such as CCUS, Green Hydrogen, Blue Hydrogen, Offshore Wind, Power to X, Emissions Reduction) would be an advantage.
  • Broad knowledge of SOLAS, other international regulations (e.g., IEC 61508, IEC 61511, IEC 60092, IEC 60079, etc.).
  • Basic project management techniques are desirable.
