Salary: £31,931
Hours: Full time or Part time (minimum 30 hours per week)
Contract Type: Fixed Term (maternity leave cover until 30th April 2024)
Location: Polaris House, Swindon, Wiltshire.

Purpose of the role
By contributing to the analysis of grant funding investments, partnerships and community engagements this role supports strategic and operational decision making and data provision across MRC's Head Office directorate. Working within the Evaluation and Analysis Team. Reporting to the Information and Analysis Manager, this role is to develop and deliver insight through the delivery of management information and business analytics. Analysing the breadth of the MRC's funded and unfunded portfolio as a whole or in specific research topic areas. The role is tasked with the generation, analysis, and visualisation of MRC's scientific portfolio to enable effective, informed decision making across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Primary tasks
• Support creation of detailed analyses using large volumes of data about MRC's funding streams, investments and partnerships, leading to accurate, timely information used to support strategic decision making
• Be responsible for building, designing and maintaining accurate and timely specific management information resources to aid planning and information led initiatives across MRC Head office including Executive Board
• Develop and improve Tableau server dashboards providing technical expertise and support to other teams in MRC working with management information. This may involve the use of SQL, Alteryx, Tableau, Google Big Query, Python, R and more basic Excel-based software tools
• Undertake ad-hoc analysis as required and promoted by senior managers in the Evaluation and Analysis team and Data Steward for MRC
• Support process change activities across MRC within data analytics and business process
Secondary tasks
• Engage at a UKRI level to share good practice and develop a consistent approach to management information
• Understand changes and opportunities with new business intelligence and management information tools, making recommendations to improve and enhance analytical and reporting capability
• Understand MRC's data within UKRI's source IT systems, the processes that generate and maintain this data to ensure consistency and accuracy of reporting. Collaborating closely with Data Owners and Data Stewards to take remedial action as required.
• Understand Freedom of Information (FOI) and Data Protection policies so that these principles can be applied in business reporting and information provision activities
Other Key information
You will be required to work early and/or late on occasion to meet business needs which may include travel and occasional overnight stays.
About you
Essential:
• Sound numeric skills, and can work within a team or independently to prepare data that can be used as evidence to support decisions
• Have the communication and social skills to collect reporting requirements from a variety of internal customers before producing data outputs to meet the needs of the business
• Advanced expertise in Excel and experience or proven understanding of SQL, Alteryx and data visualisation tools including Tableau
• Organised and can prioritise workloads, have strong attention to detail and can produce clear, replicable data reports
• Capable of leading and running a focused area of work, taking ownership for when and how results will be achieved
• Keenness to share knowledge, expertise and information to support team and organisational objectives
• Understanding and experience of Data Protection and FOI with awareness of analysts personal responsibilities under the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
• Ability to adapt to change and promote opportunities for improving services
Desirable
• Understanding and knowledge of the UK Research Funding landscape
• Biomedical science knowledge with a curiosity about the medical research landscape and the language used within the sector
• Educated to a minimum degree level, or offer equivalent experience with data analysis
