Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated, experienced Senior Healthcare Assistants to work as part of the Outpatient Department Nursing team across Princess Royal University Hospital and South Sites ( Beckenham Beacon, Orpington Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup).
You must be caring, reliable and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe, positive patient experience.
You must have effective communication skills, be flexible and be able to adapt to changing demands and priorities. Phlebotomy skills and certification would be an advantage in applying for this position.

Main duties of the job
- To assist under supervision in the delivery of fundamental nursing care in liaison with the multidisciplinary team within the Outpatient and Phlebotomy Departments across all sites.
- To contribute to the implementation and progression of a range of patient treatment and care programmes as delegated by a registered healthcare practitioner; reporting back on progress.
- To assist with clinical duties and phlebotomy to ensure the effective running of the department.
- Provide day to day supervision and co-ordination of junior staff acting both as a leader and role model for Healthcare assistants (band 2).
To maintain own personal development with support from departmental manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To monitor and record patient's clinical observations, escalating appropriately to a registered nurse as required.
- To assist in the maintenance of up to date, comprehensive and accurate records in accordance with current legal requirements both written and digital.
- To assist in the admission of patients from clinics, including any necessary risk assessments.
- To escort patients and families to other departments within the hospital as required.
- Undertake electrocardiogram (ECG) recording and point of care testing (e.g. blood sugar, urinalysis).
- After appropriate training, to assist in the collection of specimens including blood samples.
- Empty drainage bags and accurately measure and record urinary or other outputs.
- After appropriate training assist in the implementation of wound care e.g., clip removal/simple dressing/splint application.
- To participate in maintaining standards of hygiene, cleanliness and infection control, reporting problems as appropriate.
- To ensure that equipment is clean at all times, stored safely when not in use and report faults as appropriate.
To assist in setting up and preparing patient areas appropriately to the clinical area.
To ensure that all patients and relatives are welcomed and orientated to the environment.
To assist with the care of distressed patients and/or relatives.
To demonstrate an awareness of the different cultural, ethnic and religious needs.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English, or GCSE grade A-C or 4-9, O-level grade A-C or have a NARIC/ENIC which compares the qualification to UK GCSE.
- NVQ level 3 in Health Care or equivalent.
- Care Certificate or a clear commitment to complete within 3 months of joining the organization.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience within a care setting/environment.
- Evidence of being able to work well with other members of the team including communicating effectively, being kind and considerate, reliable and enthusiastic.
