Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical/ Clinical Support
• Demonstrate effective communication as a core principle in providing effective care in the peri-operative setting.
• Provide perioperative care to patients as a circulating assistant in the surgical theatre environment, including the anaesthetic room, operating room, and recovery room.
• Maintain patient confidentiality, privacy and dignity.
• Participate in the transfer of patients to and from the operating theatre complex as and when required. Ensuring correct documentation e.g., patient notes are transferred. Collection of beds from wards as and when required by each theatre.
• Undertake local blood collection training. Take delivery and collection of blood products.
• Assist in receiving, handling, and dispatching clinical specimens or blood products.
• Document patient information on the theatre computer system and paper documentation when performing circulating duties.
• Participate within the five steps to safer surgery WHO checklist as a valued member of the multidisciplinary team.
• Participate in swab and instrument counts with a qualified practitioner to prevent retained surgical items.
• Assist the decontamination co-ordinator in providing an effective TSSU service where required.
• Perform and record patient's vital signs as directed, reporting findings to a Registered professional. Perform and record temperature, blood pressure, respiration and pulse, oxygen saturation, modified early warning scores, as per Trust policy.
• Undertake wound observations, recording findings to a Registered professional.
• Recognise and respond to urgent/ or emergency situations within own role/ scope of practice.
• Follow National Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures (NatSIPPs), Local Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures (LocSIPPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Act as an advocate to all patients, demonstrating safe and effective care.
• To communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team.

Environment Support
• To ensure stock and supplies within the complex are stored in a manner which supports effective use, infection control and a safe working environment.
• Remove clinical waste/ linen and sharps from theatre for collection.
• Retrieving a stock of linen supplies for theatre as and when required.
• Cleaning and stocking of patient trolleys.
• Collection from pharmacy when required.
• Transfer of equipment to/from medical devices as required.
• Participate in theatre cleaning schedules as described in formal schedules and keep accurate records.
• Prepare a clean environment in accordance with cleaning guidelines, Infection Control Policies and completion of relevant records.
• Ensure all stock items are stored in a safe, clean manner and that stock received is stored in an appropriate and timely manner. Ensure stock rotation.
• Prepare and provide surgical instruments and supplementary for the surgical team, for day of surgery and the next operating day.
• Prepare any required medical devices for use, including the operating table, diathermy machine, suction devices, and surgical robot etc.
• Contribute to the general tidiness and cleanliness of the clinical environment including the correct disposal of waste.
• Handling and collection of gas cylinders and safe exchange of gas cylinders intraoperatively.
• Collection of C- arm as per the requirement of the list, from radiology when required.

Education and Professional behaviour
• Participate in on call rota.
• To maintain 100% mandatory training compliance at all times and inform line manager of any barriers to maintaining compliance.
• Contributes to the continuous improvement of services. May be required to demonstrate and assist more junior staff to gain clinical experience, skills and knowledge.
• Undertake all training required to perform duties effectively to the requirements of the post, including but not limited to attending all required mandatory training courses.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Vocational healthcare qualification at level 3 or equivalent experience.
  • Completed Fundamental Care Certificate
  • Evidence of competency in band 3 clinical skills.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment, undertaking a range of clinical commitments.
  • Experience of working with a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable criteria

  • Experience working in operating theatre setting

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Able to follow instructions and carry out defined routine tasks.
  • Competent in clinical skills appropriate to the job role (including taking and recording vital signs, wound observations) Basic IT skills
  • Manual dexterity

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience in routine infection control procedures in healthcare settings
  • Previous experience in circulating duties in an operating theatre

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Understanding of infection control practice in operating theatres.
  • Evidence of understanding of the healthcare support worker role

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of tasks associated with circulating duties in operating theatres
