An exciting opportunity for a full time Senior Head and Neck CNS has arisen to support our Head and Neck cancer patients across our hospitals in HHFT.

The post holder will work collaboratively, as a core member of the Head and Neck team, with key groups of staff at Hampshire Hospitals and connect work collaboratively with Guilford and Southampton Hospital and community and primary care settings as appropriate.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist will apply advanced technical knowledge of cancer and treatment within the speciality to oversee and co-ordinate services, personalise the pathway of care for individual patients to ensure the complex information and support needs of patients and families are addressed. Acting as a clinical expert within Head and Neck as a role model demonstrating high standards of quality care and providing clinical leadership to others.

Supporting the Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse and Lead Nurse for Head and Neck to ensure the development of clinical nursing services with the field implementing National cancer Initiatives at a local level contributing towards strategic decision making and implementing policies appropriate to the speciality.

Provide expert clinical advice and education to patients promoting a culture that supports self-management and health and wellbeing.

Delivers specialist education and training to other professionals involved in patient care.

To participate in audit, research, education, and development in relation to the provision of general and specialist care across the departmental, directorate and trust boundaries, providing a patient centred seamless service.

The post holder will have to line manage the remaining nurse specialist team and will endeavour to deliver a unified service across Hampshire Hospitals.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered with the NMC for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Practicing nursing for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Regular undertaking of CPD.
  • Undertaken psychological skills assessment training.
  • Communications skills course

Desirable criteria

  • Level 3 course in Head & Neck cancer.
  • Counselling course

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Experience of dealing with cancer patients in a variety of settings.
  • Knowledge of Head & Neck cancer and treatment options.
  • Experience of liaising with a variety of stakeholders to ensure patient care comes first.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience within an ENT/Head & Neck outpatient service
  • Experience of running own clinics and managing own workload/time.
  • Experience in a ward setting dealing with postoperative surgical patients.

Skills & Ability

Essential criteria

  • Good level of IT skills in word processing, emails and spreadsheets.
  • Able to be adaptable and work in a professional, flexible and proactive approach.
  • Ability to motivate self and others.
  • Ability to regularly flex from working alone to working within a large, multidisciplinary team.
  • Have a positive and keen interest in advancing clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and genuine commitment to service development.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • A calm and composed manner.

Desirable criteria

  • Previous similar experience an advantage

Essential criteria

  • Deemed fit for practice by Occupational Health.
  • To undertake any in-house training that is required
  • Well presented with a positive attitude.
  • Have a valid driving licence and access to a vehicle in order to work cross site
