Senior Fire Engineer - EWS Lead

SOCOTEC's Fire Engineering and Safety Teams provide an award-winning, flexible and forward-thinking approach, as well as a high level of technical capability, providing our clients with cost-effective and practical solutions for the full range of fire safety problems.

In response to the expansion of our Fire Engineering Team, we are actively seeking a Senior Fire Engineer - EWS Lead. This role involves providing a high level of services to our customers across the Façade Fire Safety sector.

Working across a variety of projects both autonomously and as part of a wider team, tasks you will be required to undertake as part of your role include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide continuous high quality fire engineering services to our customers, including but not limited to:
      • Develop Fire Risk Appraisal Reports to PAS 9980
      • Prepare assessment reports for new and existing external wall systems
      • Provide advisory support and carry out site visits
      • Prepare other technical engineering analysis for alternative design and installation methods related the façade fire safety design etc...
      • Third party reviews and design verification
  • Have a clear understanding of fire safety issues and provide well supported fire engineered solutions through the selection of appropriate methods and tools
  • Be familiar with relevant legislation and design guidance such as Approved Document B (ADB), BS 9999, BS 9991, BB100, HTM documents, and BS 7974 etc
  • Be familiar with relevant legislation and standards related the external wall systems such as PAS 9980, BS 8414, BR135, BS 8579, BS EN 13501-1 etc.
  • Be familiar with the different fire stopping systems and cavity barriers, including their design specifications and installation requirements.
  • Identify new work opportunities with clients and other professionals, engage actively with potential clients and prepare / review fee proposal letters and tenders
  • Manage projects and be responsible for the associated invoicing
  • Work reliably, professionally and effectively with others (internally and externally), manage time effectively (including regularly filling in timesheets) and operate within the limits of competency
  • Work within a team environment and be able to instruct (graduate) fire engineers and support staff in their work as well as to provide support to directors and associates, when required
  • Provide support, supervision, training, mentoring and guidance to staff within their remit of control (i.e. Graduate Fire Engineer and Fire Surveyors)
  • Help to drive the technical development of the fire engineering team, working in cooperation with other senior engineers
  • Maintain and manage strong client relationships and identify business development opportunities

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in engineering (fire, mechanical, structural, civil or similar field)
  • A postgraduate fire engineering qualification (certificate, diploma or masters)
  • Chartership (or working towards Chartership) and full membership with the IFE (Institution of Fire Engineers)
  • Confident communicator, good customer service skills
  • Self-motivated, able to prioritise and work on own initiative, as well as following instructions and working as part of a team
  • Numerate, and organised with attention to detail
  • Professional appearance and behaviour
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet customer needs and changing priorities
  • Reliable, punctual, honest and trustworthy

Desirable:

  • ABBE Level 6 Award in External Wall System Assessment
  • Experience in testing external wall systems
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly with regards to Microsoft Word / Outlook and Bluebeam
