About the Role

Croydon Council is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Equality Officer to lead the delivery of our newly refreshed Equality Strategy. As the council's lead officer on equalities, you will work across the organisation, collaborating with teams to improve opportunities, outcomes, and inclusion for all staff and residents. This role is crucial in ensuring that equality and diversity are embedded in all aspects of our service delivery, strategy, and culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on Equality Strategy: Drive the implementation and performance monitoring of the Council's Equality Strategy, ensuring that objectives are met and reporting to key stakeholders, including the Mayor and Cabinet.
  • Expert Advice and Guidance: Provide strategic advice on equalities to senior leadership, including the mitigation of equalities-related risks and ensuring compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED).
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including staff networks, community groups, and partner organisations, to promote and champion equality within the Council.
  • Project Leadership: Lead significant projects and programmes that advance equality outcomes, ensuring that they are delivered on time and to a high standard.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and harness new opportunities for the improvement and development of Croydon's equality practices, ensuring alignment with best practices and legal requirements.

Key Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years' experience in equality work within local government, with a strong understanding of the Equality Act 2010, PSED, and the local government context.
  • Skills: Excellent project management, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence key decision-makers and lead significant change programmes.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of equality legislation and best practices, with the ability to provide expert guidance on complex issues.
  • Communication: Strong oral, written, and presentational skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Political Awareness: Understanding of working in a politically led environment, with the ability to navigate and manage the sensitivities involved.
