Belfast City Council is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our City Services team. About the Role:
As a Senior Environmental Health Officer, you will be responsible for supervising professional and technical staff and ensuring the delivery of high-quality environmental health services. This role involves enforcing regulations, managing complex cases, and contributing to the development of policies that improve the city's health and environment.
You will work closely with other organisations and departments to ensure efficient service delivery and help achieve council objectives. In addition, you will lead and manage staff, provide technical guidance, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
Your Duties:
- Supervise and support professional and technical staff to ensure high standards of service delivery in environmental health.
- Manage and prioritise complex environmental health cases, including statutory nuisances, pollution control, noise control, and private rented sector enforcement.
- Provide advice, training, and guidance to staff, external partners, and customers on technical and enforcement issues.
- Assist with staff inductions, training, work allocation, and performance reviews.
- Lead and contribute to council-wide and departmental projects, ensuring objectives and targets are met.
- Conduct enforcement, investigative, and advisory duties in line with work programmes and regulations.
- Ensure health and safety compliance and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation.
- Liaise with elected representatives and respond to public and internal enquiries about environmental health matters.
- Compile reports, records, and statistical information for internal and external bodies as required.
Your Profile:
Essential Criteria:
Education:
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Master of Science (MSc) degree in Environmental Health approved by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
OR
- Diploma in Environmental Health (awarded by the CIEH) or equivalent qualification.
- Certificate of Registration of the Environmental Health Officers' Registration Board or equivalent.
Driving Licence:
- Full, current driving licence that allows you to drive in Northern Ireland, or access to transport to meet the job requirements.
Experience:
At least two years of relevant experience in:
- Handling technically complex and sensitive environmental health cases.
- Managing and prioritising caseloads related to regulation and compliance services.
- Working as an Environmental Health Officer in public health, housing, and environmental protection, including statutory nuisance investigations and pollution/noise control.
Your Benefits:
- £23.55 per hour.
- Pension Contribution.
Additional Information:
- Full time, Temporary.
- 08:30-17:00, Monday-Friday.
- Cecil Ward Building, Belfast.
