About the job

At National Highways, we are proud custodians of diverse habitats within our soft estates. These linear habitats integrate the Strategic Road Network (SRN) into the landscape and provide vital corridors for protected species. We are passionate about managing these assets responsibly, and we are looking for a Senior Environmental Specialist to join our Environment Team in the Midlands.

In this role, you will have specific responsibility for managing a portfolio of works for the Midlands SRN, supporting delivery of asset needs and contributing to improving the condition of the soft estate asset to benefit landscape, biodiversity and interoperability across all assets.

Please note that you will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have no more than 3 points to be considered for this position and during employment.

  • Lead and coordinate environmental schemes for renewal and improvement of soft estate assets
  • Lead and coordinate the identification and evaluation of environmental asset needs to develop renewal and enhancement schemes, including compiling evidence and options for value management
  • Provide technical advice and input into early design solutions for soft estate and environmental schemes
  • Collaborate with engineering colleagues to ensure forward programme plans reflect soft estate priorities, environmental legislation, and business strategies, including climate change resilience
  • Manage the internal programme of scheme and needs related activities, including asset data management, programming and development, associated administration and liaising with internal teams and contractors

About you.

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant environmental discipline and suitable professional body membership (e.g. CIEEM).
  • Experience of project management and the ability to work to set deadlines balancing multiple projects.
  • Proven experience of environmental asset management decision making (e.g. investment, lifecycle costs, value optimisation, service optimisation) and Value Management processes.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
