Brief Description

The purpose of this role is to provide expert technical engineering assurance, support, and guidance across the Structures engineering discipline to manage the risk, controls and threats associated with a diverse asset portfolio.

This role can be based flexibly from one of the NW&C core locations: Birmingham, Manchester or Milton Keynes.

About the role (External)

The Region and Routes are responsible for the examination, assessment, maintenance, renewal, and general management of circa 12,000 bridges, 200 tunnels, 4,600 walls, 4,000 culverts and 60 coastal/river defences, as well as the inspection of circa 45,000 equipment support structures. Ensuring all these activities are done to specific standards, policies, and remits, and all in a timely manner, is a constant challenge. The Structures Regional Team guides and supports the Engineers within the routes, and you will play a key role providing level 2 assurance to ensure structures assets are compliant with policy and standards. The Regional team also sets the CP7 strategy for the structures discipline as we address the many challenges facing our aging infrastructure within a constrained resource environment.

Day to day you will work with other teams and suppliers as well as liaising with other regions/routes and the National Technical Authority. Built upon a strong engineering background you will be expected to interpret and analyse complex engineering data, produce reports, and lead on incident investigation and the resulting assurance plans. Strong communication and team working skills are therefore essential. In addition you will be expected to have strong technical knowledge in structural behaviour and provide engineering guidance to the wider Structures teams. Other requirements include:

• Act as focal point for best practice and technical advice in the structures discipline.

• Provide support for incident and technical investigation and analysis.

• Take a lead in the delivery of assurance activities.

• Support the delivery of activities required by Network Rail policy and standards, incorporating legislation and international standards as appropriate.

• Support the development of operational processes.

• Provide support for strategy, product and asset development.

• Identify and prioritise actions to address risk and defects; and deliver corrective actions.

• Schedule and undertake analysis and risk assessments and develop mitigating actions.

• Monitor and evaluate technical and related asset data.

• Undertake information management and record-keeping.

• Undertake and support Engineering Verification activities.

In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:

• Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience (Level 6)

• Membership of a relevant technical body

• Broad technical engineering experience

• Project or financial planning and management experience

We would also like but it isn't crucial to have/to be:

• Management or supervisory experience

• Chartered status

• Formal Project Management qualification (e.g. APMP, PRINCE2, PMIP, MSP)

• Proven ability in managing commercial, contractual and financial issues

• Knowledge of the railway industry and a understanding of railway infrastructure]]>
