About the job.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Highway Engineer to join the Improvements Team in either our Wakefield or Darlington office. This role will lead and coordinate the delivery of Post Fatal Collision Reporting, manage the YNE Collision Database, undertake collision analysis, identify safety needs and develop solutions to resolve the issues.
At National Highways you will have the opportunity to make real change for the customers that use and live alongside England's biggest road network. You will use your experience and creative skills to deliver a safer road network, taking ownership of safety to protect our customers. You will work with internal and external stakeholders, including Road Safety Partnerships, to deliver interventions that will lead directly to a reduction in collisions.
- Post collision fatal investigation reporting - ensuring we work collaboratively with the Stakeholders to establish the facts of the collision in the early stages of an investigation;
- Managing data for the YNE Region in the KeyAccident Collision Database and providing reports on and statistics relating to collisions;
- Supporting and undertaking analysis of collisions to identify patterns and clusters on the road network and to support IRAP star rating improvements to the Strategic Road Network (SRN);
- Supporting the development of designs/feasibility studies for improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling/checking of relevant documents and collating evidence/options for Value Management, while taking into account new techniques, technologies, buildability, and costs. You may work on a multitude of other road safety activities to implement mitigation packages;
- Supporting the Safe Systems Approach to ensure that we deliver in the appropriate areas to improve road safety.
You may be required to work unsociable hours as part of this role, including representing National Highways as an Expert Witness in Coroner's Courts.
About you.
- A Degree, Higher National Diploma or other appropriate qualification in a relevant discipline relating to Highway Design, Road Safety or Collision Investigation and either membership of a relevant professional body such as ICE/CIHT/ITAI, or be working towards registration;
- Experience of investigating fatal and serious collisions and/or be trained to PIP2, with experience of investigating serious criminality or history in forensic collision reconstruction;
- Experience working on high-speed highways, preferably Trunk Roads and Motorways in the field of collision investigation and road safety engineering, including identifying network needs and priorities;
- Knowledge and experience of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and Advice Notes, and the use of Standards in design. You will have proven experience in the application of standards on a highways network;
- AutoCAD skills and knowledge of managing and maintaining databases.

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
