Senior Engineer - Real Time Systems Design and Delivery

About the Role

Base Location: Flexible, however our preference is that you will be based in one of our key UK sites which includes, but is not limited to, Reading, Portsmouth, Melksham, Oxford, Slough or Poole.

Salary: Up to £76,366 + company car or cash allowance and a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing, and family.

Work Type: Permanent | 37 hours per week | Flexible options available.

As Senior Engineer you will play a pivotal role in enabling the team to achieve and maintain its performance excellence in supporting the solution design, construction and maintenance of SCADA, telecommunication and protection systems for distribution networks ranging from 6.6kV to 132kV.

Following are some of the key responsibilities in the role:

  • To oversee and/or undertake full solution design of SCADA field systems, telecommunication, protection, other auxiliary systems and associated infrastructure for primary and secondary electrical distribution assets within and outside your designated SSEN regions in England.
  • Act as first line of contact for team members and other internal and external stakeholders for projects, deliverables, design reviews and for subject matter consultations.
  • Identify risks and challenges within project portfolio, formulating and deploying mitigation strategies to ensure minimal impact on them and proactively addressing issues as the arise.
  • Project coordination - you will be required to attend regular meetings with our delivery teams, regional staff and contractors to manage the portfolio of projects to be delivered to meet Ofgem targets and stakeholder expectations.
  • Provide training and mentorship for team members and contracting partners on technology, project execution, work processes and procedures.

You will have an interest in long-term development in order to identify and implement innovative and effective business improvements and support the process of transformation from concept throughout to the business-as-usual adoption of technologies, systems and working procedures.

Your Skills and Experience

To be successful in the role, you will:

  • Hold a degree (or be suitably qualified with strong experience) in Computing, Science, Electronics or Engineering. Due to the technical nature of the role, previous experience in design, delivery management and field experience in SCADA, telecommunication, telemetry and protection systems for electricity transmission or distribution at 6.6kV to 132/400kV is essential.
  • Be highly skilled in some or all the following: Substation Control Systems, Distribution Grid Automation, Power Systems Protection, Tele- protection systems, AC and DC Schematic Diagrams, RTUs, PLCs, IEDs, LAN, WAN, Multiplexers, media converters, IP L2/L3 Networking, and will demonstrate competency in most common Serial/TCP based electrical utility SCADA protocols, IEC61850 and other engineering standards.

Familiarity with various telecoms services and telemetry systems will be an advantage.

Further to the technical requirements, you will:

  • Be organisedwith an ability to work to deadlines, maintaining a safety focus with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and comfortable dealing with stakeholders at all levels, both internal and external.
  • Be able to manage multiple concurrent tasks of various dimensions. Your creativity, problem solving, work prioritisation and time management will be essential tools to have in your skillset.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft packages including Word, Excel, Visio, Project and Outlook. A flair for picking up new IT platforms would be a great advantage.

Although the role will be office based you will be travelling regularly to substations, sites, supplier locations and other SSE offices as required so a full UK driving license is essential.
