Senior Associate - Disputes/Commercial Disputes & Claims (Claims Team)

Based in Edinburgh (however candidate will be able to move between Glasgow and Edinburgh offices)

JOB PURPOSE

We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Associate to join our growing Commercial Disputes and Claims team which sits within the Disputes practice area. The team handles a wide range of defence instructions every year, from efficient processing of low value liability claims to technically complex multi-million pound personal injury cases. The team is based in Edinburgh and Glasgow and acts on behalf of businesses, public and third sector organisations, insurers and their policyholders in the defence of cases in the Court of Session and Sheriff Courts. We also handle claims in England & Wales.
In this role, you will have your own varied and exciting workload, but you will also have formal supervisory responsibilities for more junior colleagues. Work will cover the full range of defender personal injury claims including employer's liability, public liability, industrial related diseases, motor and fatal accidents. You will also be involved in providing proactive advice to clients on legal compliance to avoid claims.
We are looking for a candidate who is ambitious and keen to develop their own practice, someone who is willing to make time for business development activity - internally and externally.

CORE TASKS

  • Supervising and upskilling junior colleagues
  • Ensuring the delivery of high quality, comprehensive and accurate legal advice to clients
  • Handling your own caseload of complex and/or high value claims in the Sheriff Courts and Court of Session but also non-contentious advisory work
  • Where appropriate, undertaking your own written and oral advocacy
  • Taking responsibility for aspects of client relationship management
  • Developing and implementing your own business development plan and actively participating in the business development of the team
  • Being aware of Brodies' information security policies, and protecting information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Experienced in defender personal injury work in the Sheriff Court and Court of Session.
  • Ambitious and keen to undertake business development activity
  • Is a true team player - works to understand the team, the practice area and the firm's key clients, the industries they operate in and the challenges they face
  • Experienced in supervising junior colleagues on a regular basis
  • Works effectively with other team members, and able to work as part of a team on larger cases/projects
  • Excellent case management skills - takes responsibility for their own caseload, for complying with client SLAs and for meeting internal and court deadlines
  • Has strong drafting skills and works in a logical manner
  • Provides clear, accurate client advice that is presented to the highest standards and tailored to the client's needs
  • Communicates in a confident, clear and relaxed way
  • Has a flexible attitude and embraces new challenges
