Indirect Tax Manager

Role Purpose

EXA is a PE backed business and has been developing and building up its in-house tax function, based in London. The importance of indirect taxes in the telecommunications industry cannot be understated and EXA is bringing the responsibilities for VAT, GST/HST and US local taxes under a single role.

In this important role, reporting to the Head of Tax, you will take the lead on developing an efficient and robust tax indirect tax reporting and compliance environment, as well as liaison with external advisors and internal finance colleagues. You will work closely with members of the finance, IT and other internal teams in pursuit of an improved, more efficient and effective indirect tax reporting function.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage the relationship with the selected indirect taxes outsourcers, including keeping track of billing
  • Responsible for review of reconciliation of VAT Returns (preparation of which is mostly currently outsourced) to Oracle ERP GL Codes and management of follow up actions required;
  • Understand the configuration of the Oracle system from an indirect taxes standpoint and propose, develop and help implement improvements to the reporting process;
  • Negotiating with VAT and other indirect tax authorities;
  • Review and reconcile EC Sales Lists, Intrastat returns, and other pan-European declarations, ensuring accurate, timely and complete submission of all returns;
  • Act in an advisory capacity to the business, responding to day to day queries and providing VAT support for business projects and the indirect tax implications with them;
  • Ensure VAT risk is managed appropriately for all business transactions and make appropriate recommendations to the business on both contract reviews and systems;
  • Maintain VAT risk analytics, policies, processes & systems ensuring compliance with EU regulations
  • Analyse and support the implementation of changes to VAT legislation
  • Carry out ad hoc projects to review selected business activities and processes to manage VAT risks
  • Develop key relationships, delivering on compliance requirements and advising on wide ranging VAT issues

Knowledge

      • Professional qualification in Accounting or Tax (which may include CA, ACCA, CPA, CIOT or equivalent);
      • Strong understanding of UK and EU VAT law is essential;
      • An understanding of GST/HST in other jurisdictions is desirable;
      • A willingness to learn and manages US local tax compliance (largely currently outsourced in the US) is important

Experience

      • Prior in-house or Big 4 experience in indirect taxes is essential.
      • Telco industry experience would be a plus
      • Working knowledge of GST/HST would be a plus. An understanding or willingness to learn and lead on US local taxes is important

Technical

    • Knowledge of Excel and Oracle software
    • Good understanding of EU VAT principles is important
